Is Frank Haith to MU really a bad hire?

Pat Jones and Al Jerkins were talking about Haith & Miami today. They commented on how bad the support at Miami is and the fact that Miami currently has an interim AD. They were discussing whether Frank Martin would be interested in this job since he's from Miami and they didn't seem to think he would be interested or Miami could afford him.

Blevins granted it was Blevins but he just said there is a chance that Capel joins Haith staff

he could certainly do worse than Capel. JC would make an awesome assistant.

Yes, Haith is a bad hire. We went from being on the verge of signing one of the best young coaches to bringing in one of the worst young coaches. He should do better here than he did at Miami, but that's not saying much.

If Mizzou his historically mediocre, OU is about the same.

English and Bowers are both testing the draft. As juniors, they should. Every player gets one free shot at the NBA draft without hiring an agent. I'm surprised Ratliffe and Denmon aren't doing it, as well. They won't stay. They're just going through the process. All juniors with professional aspirations should do it.

It's not impossible for Haith to be successful, but expecting him to do better than some of the other options we had (Floyd, for example, could have been had) doesn't make sense.

One other thing I forgot to add:

The Presseys will not be following Anderson to Arkansas. He was like an uncle to them (they actually called him Uncle Mike). Key word there may be was. They came to Mizzou on Anderson's word that he'd be there. He strung out the decision, saying he'd stay at Mizzou, which obviously didn't happen. They've both been telling people they're staying, and supposedly if Phil does leave, it will not be for Arkansas. The Pressey family apparently isn't too happy.

Tournament appearances and conference titles (regular season and tournament) are virtually the same.

The difference is a handful of wins in the tournament. Without actually winning a title, those wins are historically of little importance.

I've always said OU has a slight edge, but the programs are closer than some here make them out to be.

I considered OU and Mizzou about equal when Norm was there. I'd give OU an edge since then, but it's not that far.

Random thought, but looking at the historical stuff always makes me wonder what could have been had Norm not got cancer. That pretty much ruined what was potentially his best season and changed his career from that point forward. That was supposed to be Norm's peak.

Bright spot to that though is it led Norm to champion the coaches vs. cancer. Without him, it may not exist.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Two Missouri starters have declared for the NBA draft on the same day the school is expected to approve a contract to hire Miami's Frank Haith as its new men's basketball coach.

Juniors Kim English and Laurence Bowers announced Monday that they plan to pursue pro careers but have not hired agents. That means they can return to school if their NBA plans don't work out.

The announcement comes as Missouri curators prepare to meet Monday night in a closed meeting. A person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press late Sunday that Haith is headed to Columbia after seven seasons in south Florida.

Yeah they may end up with less talent than we had last year. The Pressley brothers are probably gone because they are related to Anderson. I can't remember how.

If I was a Mizzou fan I would call it a 'handful of wins in the tournament' too.

I agree that its closer than some OU fans believe... You're definitely right about that.

But OU's superiority over Mizzou is also greater than what you make it out to be.

I remember you saying the difference is "...miniscule at best", when that is not the case. OU isn't substantially better, but it is undeniably better. It is more like "miniscule at the very least".

Agreed. And downplaying tourney results is the only way to justify calling the difference 'minuscule'

Exactly.

No offense to Sawyer, but I seriously doubt he would be considering the National Title appearances, Final 4's, Elite 8's, and Sweet 16's of "little importance" if Mizzou had more than OU. He is only taking that arbitrary stance because himself and his school are on the losing end of the debate.

I put very little weight on NCAA tournament success that isn't recent. A few more wins decades ago that didn't lead to a championship aren't very important today IMO. I'd give UT an edge over MU today for what they've done over the past two decades despite not really doing much before that.
