Everybody knows I was not a fan of getting rid of Capel.

But Ada is right. Buzz Williams is a perfect fit for the OU job. I have to believe the only way Joe C. fires Capel is because he knew exactly who he was replacing him with. Since Gillispie (who would have been a great hire) is already announced to Tech and after 10 full days we have not hear a peep about anything.

It's gotta be Buzz. And it's gotta be locked up. Something that was floated through contacts before the end of the season and the response was very strong.

I'm not changing my expectations for next year. 20+ wins. .500+ record in the Big XII and an NCAA tournament birth.

Just as I said when Joe C. was refusing to answer questions about Capel it more than likely meant he had already decided to head in another direction, the way Buzz answered the question and the silence coming from Norman point to an already agreed upon deal.

The only story with sources that has been floated is that Buzz is our #1 target.

I think it's either Buzz or Tad Boyle. With Arkansas getting Mike Anderson I think it'll be Buzz.

No way were getting buzz now

Link? Proof?

Seriously, admit you're like the rest of us and don't have a clue if Buzz will be our next coach. I feel just as certain that he will be on the bench wearing the C&C next season. But that's mostly wishful thinking on my part and the fact that I want to see him at OU so much, I have convinced myself that's he's the one.

While I appreciate boca's confidence in my ability as a soothsayer, anything I say is pure speculation. Looks like we may have a lot in common. ;)

I'm sort of the same way; and as stated in another thread, silence is no real indicator of anything HOWEVER look at how there are various names tossed around just about every open job out there EXCEPT the OU job. There has been only one named discussed nationally, Buzz Williams. That's it. We throw out names on here, but nationally, there is only one. That's it, and Buzz has been very non-committal on his ties to Marquette excepting coach-speak that we have heard a million times.

Finally, there were reasons to keep Capel, which many may disagree with, but there were reasons to keep him for at least one more year...I agree I don't think he gets the axe unless there was already a deal in place with someone, someone Joe can't talk about because they are still playing games. Again, pure speculation...I'm not psychic, that is why I have caller i.d.

Forgive me if this has been covered and I think Buzz would be a good hire for OU or Missouri, but have these issues been discussed?

1. Marquette has the 2nd highest budget for basketball operations next to Duke. Duke spends North of $14 million each year on basketball. Marquette spends $10.3 million. At a school with no football program already spending a great deal of money on hoops, what would OU have to pay Buzz to lure him to Norman and what would they have to spend on basketball operations overall to match the package he has at Marquette?

2. Marquette paid Tom Crean over $2.2 million in the last year of his contract which shows a willingness to pay big money on their part. Now Crean made a Final 4 at Marquette (and probably wishes he could turn back the clock and not leave for the Indiana job). If Marquette makes it no further in the tourney... knowing that salaries have inflated since Crean left, I would speculate that Marquette could pay North of $2.5 million. Would OU spend that kind of money on a coach that is 38 and has only 4 years of head coaching experience behind him?

3. If OU is going to spend North of $2.5 million per year for a coach couldn't they make a run at other high profile coaches like say Ben Howland at UCLA who makes $2 million per year and is rumored to be unhappy at UCLA? Seems like if that is going to be the going price that Buzz is a bit of a high risk proposition at that price. Seems like you could get a guy with more skins on the wall for that money.

More skins on the wall elsewhere don't necessarily equate to more skins on the wall at OU. Some of the things that makes Buzz attractive is that he is from this part of the country, has connections and is a cultural fit. He knows how to talk to Texas HS and AAU coaches, something that JC probably wasn't as skilled at, and that other coaches from other parts of the country might not do as well.

Hoopster. Those numbers are skewed. Since Marquette is a one trick pony their entire athletic department expenses are allocated to the basketball program.

The OU athletic department expenses are allocated across all the sports most likely pro rata to revenue so we know where it's all being accounted for ... football. In addition OU owns our arena while Marquette leases the Bradley center. On an apples to apples basis OU probably spends more on basketball.

gotcha- makes sense

I'm always skeptical of an article that starts off with, "well, this might not be accurate but...". I think the bottom line [pun intended] is that the University of Oklahoma Athletic Department in its totality can probably match Marquette pretty easily. And let's not forget facilities and potential conference re-alignment issues that could leave a school like KU, much less Marquette, scrambling for a home.
