Kris Martin - Commit

Amateur hour. The staff can't make mistakes like this. Further proof of their incompetence imo. Feel bad for the kid

I hope Martin is ruled immediately eligible and signs with the Sooners. I liked his film. Hopefully, we can make lemonade out of lemons.

Me too. I was impressed with everything I saw of him on video. I will be very disappointed if we lose him to another school.

I'm not a fan of waiting a year on pretty much any player unless he's a bonafide starter (spangler), especially given the lack of talent on this team. That said, i feel so bad for this kid that i think Kruger needs to honor the kids commitment if there was any error on ou's end regardless if he'll be a bonafide starter..

I’m not a fan either, but I’m not in favor of waiting for Martin if he has to sit out next season. I only want him if he will be eligible to play this fall. I feel bad for him, too, because he clearly thought he had an offer. But, we’re in a tough spot right now. We can’t afford to use a scholarship on a recruit who won’t be able to play next season.

I also understand that coaches make mistakes. Nothing anyone can do about that now except apologize and hope the NCAA will grant him a waiver. Seems to me this is similar to Baker Mayfield’s situation when he transferred from Texas Tech, except he wasn’t on a scholarship. Big difference in the schools. CSU has already given Martin a full release. TTU and pretty boy Cliffy Kingsbury refused to release Baker. My gut tells me the NCAA will approve this one, unless there’s more to it than we know. Got my fingers crossed for Kris Martin!

I don’t think it is anything like the Mayfield situation at all. He had to sit out a year. The only thing in dispute was the Big 12 intra-transfer rule and a loss of a year of eligibility which he eventually regained after they reconsidered the lack of a written scholarship offer. The only thing remotely close here is lack of a written scholarship offer but totally different situation.

This Martin situation stinks. This is possibly more lack of attention to detail from the OU basketball organization. If we offered we should honor it. If someone needs to be punished it should be one or more of the people in the organization who didn’t do any homework. If we offered with the caveat of immediate eligibility then no problem.

I read at one point that he would be a grad transfer. This was when there seemed to be a lot of uncertainty about his eligibility, but it's possible that his ability to be a grad transfer will depend on his passing a bunch of classes this semester and over the summer. So maybe hes a grad transfer if he does pass all these classes but, at this point, we can't just assume that will happen.

It's also possible the "grad transfer" stuff was really all about him not having to sit out next year. Maybe he's assuming that he'll get an exemption from the NCAA since he sat out this year and Larry Eustachy was fired but, again, maybe the OU coaches aren't ready to assume to NCAA will grant that exemption.

This bad karma is on Lon for hiring his son. There's no way he was more qualified to be Assistant Coach at a high-level D1 university than other prospects. The team has suffered because of it. He looks absolutely clueless on the bench.

Agree 100%. Myself and many others said it was no bueno when he hired him.

Wait, what? Ok then.

This is on Joe C, 100%. He's been a really good AD, but his biggest flaw has been failing to root out nepotism.

I don't get it. I know of nepotism existing in only 5 of OU's 17/19 sports with football, MBB, WBB, SB and women's gymnastics. :) Could have existed in other sports in the past but I am unaware.

And it's hurting 3 out of those 5.

It's one thing if you're a legend, like Gasso, and you hire your son away from Michigan State. Or if you're hiring somebody like Mike Stoops, who was a HC at Arizona, and is being offered the same job by Urban Meyer.

It's an entirely different story when you're hiring somebody whose only experience is at Northern Arizona.

Stoops and Gasso earned the spots they're in, regardless of whether or not it worked out. Kruger unequivocally did not. He was not getting similar job offers before he came here, and he won't be anytime soon.

I disagree. Lon didn't just hire his kid to give him a job, he already had one. I still don't think that is our biggest problem. Kelvin has his son on the staff, and Quannis White who is a first year assistant I believe. And they did just fine.

We have much larger problems than one of the assistant coaches being Lon's son.

I agree with this. My only complaint is that mike should have been sent packing after this season and the only reason he wasn’t is because of his last name.

I mean final 4 in football is bad right??

giving up 50 to 1 dimensional Georgia is horrible yes. Giving up 52 to osu is horrible. Tech last year. West Vrginia in 2012, Baylor in 2013 & 2014. Do you need more examples of horrible defense under Mike Stoops?
