March Madness and Covid-19

I think we go back to something like normal when a) there's a vaccine (which, if I understand correctly, would probably be updated every year, like the flu shot) and b) when they come up with treatments that lessen the likelihood of death (I'm no doctor so I don't know how likely the latter is, but the former will come in time).

The vaccine might be available in 18 months, that's what I've read.

Another interesting outcome of this whole thing is that we get to see how poor the STEM education in the US is.

serious question why does italy have more cases than the USA ??

their first case was after the first case in our country ??

Nobody knows for sure, but it may have to with social customs that make it spread more quickly. They greet each other with kisses and don't have the same sense of personal space as Americans.

The hysteria over this thing is gonna end up being way worse than the actual cause in this case. I do think in like 6 months or whatever it'll all be blown over by then and not near as bad as people thought overall. But the hysteria over a flu world wide is pretty funny to see. I'm not saying don't be serious about the flu but this is a big overreaction to it. SARS, Malaria, Ebola were all way more deadly than this virus is. This one will infect more people but it'll just end up being basically like a regular flu bug when all is said and done. The flu has killed about 5,000 people the last few months nobody cares.

It's not the flu and your analysis is sorely lacking anyway. A lack of respirators and hospital space is what kills people. Italy is having to decide "who will stay and who will go". Like the Claw. or the Clash. The logistics of this are the problem and minimizing the threat to allay fears creates greater danger. So recognize the problem instead of adding to it.

Well said

**** Jim Traber but the hysteria and panic over this will be worse than the actual results coming out. This is no different from swine flu 10 years ago that tanked the stock market for a short time back then.

The market did NOT crash in 2009. From the time the virus first broke in March 0f 2009 until the peak number of cases in the US in July of 2009, the market was up about 30%.

And I will choose to believe the WHO, CDC and Epidemiologists that are broadcasting the warnings of how serious this is over the view that this is all panic, overreaction, and the flu is more serious.

The Director of Infectious Diseases testified before Congress TODAY this is 10x more deadly than the flu and is going to get worse, but we have posters on this board that say that is hysteria or not accurate.

Even worse, we have unqualified governmental officials saying as much and stifling our access to info from genuine experts.

Absolutely, this is the big problem, failure of leadership from the top. They are more concerned with how this helps or hurts electorally and how they can spin the narrative.

This is what is so baffling. Based on the information out there from LEGITIMATE sources, how can so many people out there believe the spin or political narrative from either side? But especially the narrative that this is not a big deal, a media-created hysteria, the statistics aren't accurate, is just another outbreak, not as bad as the common flu, will go away, or. it's only serious if you are over 60. (did I miss any?)

I know politicians or leaders spin it to their benefit, but I don't understand how so many, like those in our family on this board, can believe the narrative out there.

Ignore the facts or believe it and say you are not concerned at all, but to not accept the truth is baffling. Knowledge is a powerful thing.

Gavin Newsom would tend to disagree.

BTW, in context, Newsom was talking about the response only to the situation with the Princess cruise ship that was infected off the coast of California, not the overall response.

Let's not go overboard on the spin here. I watched this press conference yesterday and yes it was surprising, but it's not like he said the administration got it all right and gave an endorsement to Trump.

What he said, in an answer to the reporter, first about the cruise ship, and then he expanded to all the efforts. He said his first concern was the safety of Californians, not political spin, and to this point, the administration including the VP had given him every resource or support that he had asked for and answered his questions and concerns. He added that he was satisfied with the job they had done to support his efforts and Californians.

There are two sides to this story, as is the usual, and neither side really knows what lies ahead as we are in unchartered waters and like many times before only "father time" will provide us with the accurate answers.

I like your use of the word "overboard" here. I did not spin anything. I actually expressed what Gavin was pointing to.

Wait, there is and always will be only one set of facts. You are correct in that we don't know what those facts will determine as far as consequences, but there are still only one side of the truth.

What may I ask is the other side to this story than the facts based on statistics and health professionals?

Lol, nice "catch". It truly was unintended but nice turned pun on your part!
