March Madness and Covid-19

Most of the places you mentioned were never shut down

We have a winner!

Nothing closed.... the government didn't take it seriously... the stay at home orders were a total joke because anywhere normal people go other than restaurants closed... nobody wore masks.

End result: Look at our cases and deaths.

Mathis Brothers? Now that's funny. You forgot to include Haimy's Acupuncture Emporium.

Haimy's Acupuncture Emporium is included in the "etc".

ummm so you admit most of these places never closed but at the same time blame the opening of these places that never closed to the skyrocketing cases of covid? Do tell me more about how this works

To add to this, it seems you believe all of these places should have been shut down but that protesting was A OK?

Nope. Here are the quotes. If Fauci is given a pass for these statements, so should teh POTUS for "not acting soon enough"...even though he did impose travel restrictions very early and was criticized for it

There are a ton more out there. In mid feb he said to not wear masks and to just wash your hands.

I know that some of these are early in the timeline of covid and things changed. But why should Trump have the foresight to see these things happening but Fauci shouldn't? Do you guys really expect Trump to go against Fauci and those saying it won't be a very big issue? You expect him to be smart enough to do that?

His response hasn't been perfect, but it was far from bad. Short of a nationwide mask requirement, I don't think there is much he can do.

Also, who is going to enforce a mask requirement if all the police are defunded?

I couldnt care less what you have to quote, I remember when he made that announcement. And I remember the context and his caveats. He specifically stated more than a few times that his intent was to make sure the first masks were available for first responders then he believed civilians should don them. Saying he did this thinking it wasn't a threat is just plain wrong.

So you don't care about direct quotes that refute your point? Interesting. I guess if you aren't in a discussion for truth, what is the point of having one.

Nothing closed? If that's the case, then you can't blame the recent increases on reopening...because you can't reopen if "nothing closed." Obviously a lot of things closed. Furthermore, this was taken very seriously. If you don't believe this was taken seriously, please name another time in US history where an infection was taken more seriously. These are the most extreme measures we've ever taken as a country (under any party) -- I welcome anybody to refute that statement.

The fact that we're approaching 200 pages, yet the discovery of a treatment that may reduce mortality by 1/3 got 0.5 pages at most is pretty telling of this discussion. This is not a safe place for reasonable, intelligent discussion.

I would note that I believe I posted that information first. :)

Maybe after the hydroxychloroquine debacle people are gun shy

For the record, I wasn't specifically calling you out with that statement. But yes, I do believe you were one of the few to actually mention that breakthrough.

Must I really subject you to centuries of arguments over hearsay to support my conclusion?

Florida "re-opened" May 19th at 50% capacity. Texas opened Phase I on May 1st and Phase II on May 18th. Logic would tell me that spikes should have begun sooner if these re-openings were the primary causation factor for recent increases in these two states. The exponential rise didn't begin (at least in Texas) until June 15th. Also, testing has increased significantly since re-opening phases.

We all knew that re-opening would result in increased positive cases....that was pretty universal in most projections. But the recent rise in spikes (especially in inner cities) would have one common denominator.

In the end, reopening contributed, protests certainly contributed and this has led to localized spikes in several large metropolitan areas. Maybe one silver lining is that younger populations seem to be testing positive more (instead of older higher risk populations)....so now this younger demographic needs to be disciplined in their situational awareness.....and not spread it.

On a real positive note, we've really locked down Long Term Care residences and facilities....thereby doing our best to protect the most vulnerable. Thus, I expect the death rate will continue to decrease significantly if we keep these precautions in place.

Pretty much nothing I mentioned closed.... again, some small restaurants closed but the big ones went to take-out only... The difference is how the people reacted the first time. Almost everyone I know took it seriously the first time around. Stocked up on supplies, went to the store by themselves and less frequently, wore masks, you couldn't even find soap and hand sanitizer because people were being militant about it. People weren't even doing family events, weddings, etc the first time around.

Compare that to this time around.... people aren't wearing masks... Whole families are in the stores and stuff again... People aren't being as militant about sanitation...

So it's not so much that stuff closed, it's that people took it seriously the first time, and are tired of it now and went back to normal life. That is biggest difference.
