MBB TPT2 TRANSFER PORTAL THREAD 2

I think redshirting has become as old as dial up internet and the practice should be abolished. The rules should be changed and redshirts removed. It’s archaic. All players should have 5 years to play. Period. That covers development, injuries, etc. Those that are elite will go pro early and others will be able to play early and still not have to worry about wasting a year.

The game has changed and all the other eligibility rules have changed. This should be a no brainer. No RS, just 5 years of eligibility.

I agree with the "don't recruit him" logic, only problem is I think Moser would have signed somebody better if he could have. I don't think he has the ability to. You can't tell me Moser was laser focused on Northweather as his top guy the entire process. Do I think Moser recruited the hell out of him after he struck out on a ton of other bigs? Sure. Until he proves otherwise, Moser has a big man recruiting problem. At least a talented, non-injured, Big 12 ready one.

I would get on board with that, but why is it that every year I flip on tourney time I see about 50,000 different smaller/less prestigious schools with bigs I would kill for. You can't tell me that all these schools with not half the resources OU has are paying more. Maybe you can't compete with Keen-tuck, but hell can we at least beat out ONE of these vast number of teams with better bigs... and maybe try something called.. development? That's obviously happening ALOT elsewhere. Maybe I answered my own question. Not even the guards are really getting any development here.

So which one is it? Recruit a day 1 big 12 starter or recruit a late bloomer out of high school that needs development?

To get the guys that are ready from day 1, you'll need an enormous bag of cash or be able show a track-record of development for bigs. We don't have either at the moment, but hopefully the addition of Ryan Humphrey as an assistant can help us with the latter.

When I watch, those smaller schools often have great guard play rather than bigs. They do occasionally have quality bigs I'm envious of, but those are typically seasoned guys that they developed over several years. Unless you're a blue blood (UK, Duke, KU, etc), if you want a 6'10 guy, you're going to have develop him yourself.

Can you provide some examples? And what's to keep Northweather from improving while also gaining some game experience?

If you want a list of guys that are 6'10 and contributed over the last 15 years, I think you're only going to find four. Blake is a clear outlier, but the other three were irrelevant early in their careers. Longar was 3 years removed from high school and still only getting 7 minutes. Tanner wasn't even relevant at EWU as a freshman.

If you drop the cutoff to 6'8, Osby and Spangler's redshirt years were fortunate for both parties. They made huge leaps following them, and I think their 5th year effectively doubled their NCAA tournament experience

I think you answered your own question.

Why stop there? Let's give them 10 years

I don’t understand your argument. Players get 5 years to play 4. 5 years to play 5 seems a good compromise instead of redshirting and extra years for hardships and Covid. Nobody should be playing college ball for 7 years.

I don't understand why you are proposing yet another thing be changed in sports. Whats wrong with the current system?

You get 5 years to play 4, but you get to play a part of that RS season anyway. So 5 years to play 4+. Then many got get a covid year, 6 years to play 5+. Not to hard to get a medical redshirt year either, I mean you have so many seasons to get an injury to shut it down (warranted or not), so 7 years to play 6+.
Doesn't matter what the system is, people will find a way to get extra years, exceptions will be made, etc. College is 4 years by design, so the redshirt year was a way to get an extra year in the first place.

You don't get to play during a redshirt season in basketball. At least that's my understanding. Someone will correct me if I've gotten it wrong.

Yea the only way you can get a redshirt is if you play less than 30 percent of the games AND you suffer a season ending injury before the midway point of the season. There is nothing like the football rule that allows you to play a certain number of games and then redshirt without an injury.

We definitely need another ball handler, but would he be okay as the backup PG? Or do you think he's being sold on possible starting with Milos at the 2? Right now if Milos is the PG, that's really about the only position I see as not needing an upgrade.

To me, this is a Grant Sherfield replacement. Nothing wrong with someone who can get to the line and consistently get buckets.

OU needs to upgrade talent across the board and there will be plenty of minutes to go around. OU can also point to plenty of instances with 2 PGs on the floor at once.

Um….this is strange.

To a certain extent, you take what you can get. With the overabundance of talented but undersized guards that can't shoot, I suppose it could make sense to bring one in as a starter and slide Milos to more off-ball action. I don't think that should be plan A, though. I'd be much more excited about bringing in a wing like Jaykwon Walton that is 6'7 and shot 40% from 3 last year. Or one of these post players.

Obviously we can take both, and we absolutely have to bring in another ballhandler with the departure of Bijan. I'm happy we're bringing guys in for visits. I'm just saying that I hope a guy like this is closer to our last addition than our top addition. I probably would have preferred Bijan in the second PG role.
