MBB TPT2 TRANSFER PORTAL THREAD 2

It's ironic that Schroeder is leaving and Norweather is staying, given that keeping players engaged with playing time is such a common argument against redshirting. Small sample, obviously.

As someone who works with college students, I do think there are cases where players benefit from a year to acclimate to college before being asked to contribute on the court/field. I'd like to think that doing what is best for the player ends up being better for the team in the long run.

I think Wichita, steve, and i will die on this hill. Pointless, unless injured and i don't think northweather was hurt ALL YEAR. He couldnt get SOME minutes over godwin?

Yes I will die on this hill. It MIGHT make sense at KU or Duke if a guy is behind McDonald's All-Americans. Northweather was behind a walk-on and a dude that couldn't stay out of foul trouble.

It is a tough chore going from one level to the next...and we aren't even sure what the level was he was playing at overseas. It didn't look very good on film.....then he comes in injured and has to miss a HUGE chunk of time before being released....then you expect him to compete immediately?

I played college basketball (although not D1) and it was a definite learning curve....I also coached at the college level and there were a LOT of kids who were very good HS players who came in totally unprepared for what was about to hit them in college. A lot struggled the first year (hence they didn't play much)......he simply wasn't quite ready...nothing wrong with that....it is what it is.

I think you're thinking of Schroder...

Doolittle technically redshirted right? Did tyler neal redshirt? I'm getting too old to remember

I think be played as a true freshman, and if I recall, came halfway through his sophomore year due to academic ineligiblity or something like that. A lot of people felt we shouldn't have burned his redshirt for the collapse that ensued.

Ryan Spangler redshirted his first year at OU, and that worked out pretty well for both parties.

Didn't he sit out a transfer year? He came in from Gonzaga.

Then perhaps Moser shouldn't have used a scholarship on him. We need immediate help--and have since Moser arrived in Norman. We haven't been in a position to be taking guys who were projects or were going to need extra time to adjust. Did Moser come in thinking there was no particular rush?

Correct. He didn't have a choice, but it still worked out well for us. With today's transfer rules, he wouldn't have had to sit out, and that would have been a mistake. It takes time for most these tall teenagers that aren't NBA athletes to grow into their bodies. Norweather is a lot more Spangler than Blake Griffin.

And Detrick was redshirted only because we had so much depth at that position.

It makes no sense to redshirt a guy in today's college basketball climate. Zero.

So do the kid dirty if he decides to stay here or somewhere else for a 5th year? Makes perfect sense. Kids a late bloomer. Didn’t play high circuit.

I have no clue if he’ll help or transfer but burn a year just because makes no sense… common sense.

How is it "doing the kid dirty?"

I'm with Sky, if he's not ready don't recruit him. We need immediate help and he was taking the spot of a possible difference-maker in the portal.

By the way, these guys are professional athletes now. This is a new paradigm.

the 11th 12th 13th man is not taking a "difference-maker" spot

they are for development players ..

I agree with the "don't recruit him" logic, only problem is I think Moser would have signed somebody better if he could have. I don't think he has the ability to. You can't tell me Moser was laser focused on Northweather as his top guy the entire process. Do I think Moser recruited the hell out of him after he struck out on a ton of other bigs? Sure. Until he proves otherwise, Moser has a big man recruiting problem. At least a talented, non-injured, Big 12 ready one.

this makes no sense. If there was a difference-maker in his place it wouldn't be the 11th, 12th, or 13th man. If I could get a guy in the portal that can contribute now I don't take a Northweather if I'm at OU and we need help at every position.

We don't have the luxury of developmental players right now. YMMV

Ou has the problem, not so much the coaches. Lon couldn’t get any big men either, because they tend to get paid.

True, we aren't really talking about just college kids anymore. They're professionals whether we like it or not.

Even back when OU was good we couldn't get guys like Shelden Williams to stay home and play here. I still remember Mike Maddox and Kevin Pritchard going to KU. It's annoying.

Most bigs are projects. If you aren’t gonna play him then redshirt. Maybe he plays a 5th year for UCO. Still do right by the kid.

So if burn the year just because so no one gets a 5th year? You can waste some on projects and develop.

Can’t won’t play 11-12-13 guys needs 8-9 tops

I would get on board with that, but why is it that every year I flip on tourney time I see about 50,000 different smaller/less prestigious schools with bigs I would kill for. You can't tell me that all these schools with not half the resources OU has are paying more. Maybe you can't compete with Keen-tuck, but hell can we at least beat out ONE of these vast number of teams with better bigs... and maybe try something called.. development? That's obviously happening ALOT elsewhere. Maybe I answered my own question. Not even the guards are really getting any development here.
