Missouri hires Kim Anderson

I hope it works out for this guy. He seems like a guy that has more than put in his dues to pursue his dream of being the head coach at Missouri and it finally happened.

That was my reaction too.

It could be an excellent hire for all anyone knows. Also, I challenge anyone to go and look at what Norm Stewart did before Mizzou which was not much.

This brings back memories for me. My former roommate was from Missouri and we used to go to the Big 8 pre-season basketball tournament in Kansas City every year. Every Big 8 team played 3 games in 4 days and we watched every one of them ... even the game on Saturday morning for 7th place when there weren't 100 people in the stands.

It was magic on Saturday when Ted Owens and his Kansas team would end up playing Norm Stewart's Missouri team. The stands were packed and rocking. Those 2 and K-State under Jack Hartman were the big draws. OU had some good teams under Dave Bliss. I remember the guys like John McCullough, Al Beal, Cary Carabine, Aaron Curry were fun to watch.

Anyway, Kim Anderson epitomized Norm's big, physical teams of the 70's. He was a really good player. I wish him the best of luck at Missouri.

Man, talk about memories!!! I did the same drill with my dad (we used to live at the NAIA tournament in KC as well) and remember back as far as John MacLeod/Alvan Adams (with Denny Price as an assistant).

Great times and memories.

Anderson was an excellent power forward/center for Missouri from 1973-77. But, he played a bit of a role in the epic OU-Mizzou game of 2/2/77 - by missing the potential game-winner from near the foul line with a second left. That's the game that I've posted about before, from my freshman year at OU - the first-ever LNC sellout crowd. OU won, 66-63.

I'm sure he remembers it, as well as the one the year before at the LNC, when the smallish '76 Sooners led them wire-to-wire before winning 68-57. That Mizzou team still won the league and lost in OT in the regional finals to Michigan. The '77 team had everyone back except for sweet-shooting guard Willie Smith, who had ironically enough, played JC ball in Oklahoma before going to Missouri in '74.

Nothing at all wrong with hiring a DII coach, if he's the right fit and has recruiting ties to the area. Some of the greatest coaches in the game's history never got the opportunity to coach DI or in the NBA. I'm not familiar with him, so I don't have an opinion. But for some of you guys on here to blast him because he is from a lower level is really small-minded and silly. Sorry, that's just the way I feel. Hope it works out good for your team Sawyer.
