No offense to Toby Rowland

Who said they didn't? Maybe Toby knock out the interview. Maybe Joe thought that Toby was the best for the job.

Good thing Bud didn't listen to people like traber when he went after bob barry.

Did traber have any experience doing color before the diamondbacks? Why didn't they go after a national guy? They really screwed up hiring him.

Whoa there Tundra. Traber is not the only guy that was surprised OU didn't go after a national guy. Carpenter was not interviewed. They interviewed 5 guys. I am certain Brian Brinkley was one and there was a Kansas City guy. I don't know who the other two were. Traber was not bashing Toby at all.Did you listen to it? He is not the only one with that opinion and he made a point of not criticizing Toby.

So they did interview some national guys. Thanks. And yes I did listen and traber . never once said maybe they did interview some national guys but Toby still got the job.

Why would you think the PBP hire is inconsequential? He'll be one of the faces of OU athletics; of course it matters.
Yes. Replacing BBsr with TR is a slap in the face to the fans. I'm surprised Joe didn't hire a high school pbp personality. Joe needs to stop using the word excellence and start using the words mediocrity and cheap.

When BBS was first hired by Bud Wilkinson he was a HS pbp guy.

That was a different era. Ask people who are visually impaired what they think of BBsr as a pbp guy.

You know, this just wouldn't be an OU message board (or local topic really) without ripping a guy before he's had one "official" day yet with his new job. :ez-laugh:

I would hope the word "AWFUL" would come up at some point. I WILL say this, however. If you are visually impaired then you probably wouldn't know just how awful he'd become.

I think it will take about 2 games for this to go away...TR is a pro in every since of the word. You guys are drunk...

its pretty obvious there are posters on here just trying to rile people up. wish the mods would get on this more b/c its obvious and is making the board pretty weak

Since when did you have to have an extensive "resume" to be a play-by-play guy? If Rowland met their criteria and they were confident in his ability, that's all that matters. We're not talking about OU's next basketball coach. In theory you could take the town drunk and if he has the best voice, style and delivery then he would be the man for the job.

Chuck Kelly was in the mix.

I heard, from a pretty decent source, that Bob Carpenter declined the job. Not sure if that decline was an interview or a job offer, but I heard he wasn't interested.

Chuck Kelly does a good job and is a really good guy.

I consider Chuck a friend and wish he would have gotten the job. That said, I'm sure there are reasons why he didn't. Toby's a local guy. Chuck isn't as well known because he does his football work in the DFW area, at the high school level.

Who was the KC guy?

You could say the PBP guy was a bigger deal back then than it is now because most people didn't have TV's. Look at all the people in this thread who admitted they never listen to the radio because they watch every game on TV.

I am perplexed at the complaining about this hire? As I've said a few times before, I'm OK with saving money on the PBP hire to spend more for a basketball coach. What if we hired Bob Carpenter but paid him $500K per year, which meant we could only offer a basketball coach 1 million per year. We would end up with Shaka Zulu or Chris Mooney and then all of you would be complaining about the basketball coach hire.

FYI -- Tramel this about the position in his blog yesterday:

Rowland’s play-by-play experience is limited, particularly in football. But the job is more than just radio. Rowland will in many ways be the face of the athletic department. Hosting coaches shows. Emceeing events. Producing video. The pending OU network — which is really a cable channel, I don’t know why it’s called a network — cries out for a productive, sharp guy who can create content and contribute to all kinds of shows. Filling up 24 hours a day, seven days a week, isn’t easy.

So, maybe Carpenter and some of the national personalities either couldn't do all that's needed for the job, or maybe they didn't want to?

Well the guy has local ties, already works for and is good standing with the university, and likely will be a lifer if he works out. Yes it isn't some "national" hire, but I guess I missed the thread where we are in an arms race with KU/UT/East Handkerchief St. for the penultimate PBP guy.

I have no issue if this was a cheap hire, this is a business where budgets do matter. Owen Field isn't built over a vault of endless mountains of gold doubloons. Ledger sheets are to be adhered to, not to be ignored ala the US Govt.

Nice hire.

Why would we want the next to last PBP voice? Why would anyone want that, for that matter?

I actually agree with you though. And I think the point people are missing is Rowland's experience on the TV side. I suspect he will play a large role on the new OU Network.
