These are just opinions from watching one high school playoff game.
I watched Harrah play Blanchard on Saturday. Apparently, the coach at Harrah does not believe in throwing the ball to his best player. Harrah’s offense could be soooooooooo much better if they would run the offense through Brady Manek. Instead, Harrah seems to be in a hurry to jack-up outside shots, even though there is no shot clock in OK high school basketball. Goodness; what is the hurry? Take your time and get Manek the ball. Manek only touched the ball on something like 15% of Harrah’s offensive possessions. Maybe less.
Even with the opponent’s defensive focus on Manek, he is the tallest player on the floor. All Harrah has to do is throw the pass HIGH to Manek near the free throw line, and there is no way to defend it.
Manek often worked hard to get good position in the paint, but the passes to him were rare even when he got himself wide open. On those rare occasions that he did get a pass, he usually scored or kicked-out to a wide open shooter when the triple-team came. Harrah could have done this all day long, on every possession. Instead, they almost never did this.
It is a pity that Manek does not play for a better 4A high school coach. I went to the game with a friend that said Harrah played this same way last season, wasting the offensive talents of their best player.
Harrah is in the winner’s bracket and only has to win one more game to make the State Tournament, but I expect them to lose the winner’s bracket game Friday night vs. Tulsa Central. If so, Harrah will have to win Saturday against the survivor of the loser’s bracket to make it to State.
Manek did not impress with his defense or rebounding. He needs to add bulk and strength in college. His offense did impress. He can shoot the ball. He has a sweet stroke and gets the shot off quickly. He can also make 3-pointers with no problem. There is an old saying that goes something like: it is easier to teach defense than it is to teach someone to shoot the ball. Manek can shoot it. Late in the game. he also showed good handles for a tall player when he helped break the press.
I look forward to watching his development at OU.
