OT: Football Talk

Answer my question…. Who are we hemorrhaging? I’ll wait
I realize you aren’t a reading comprehension teacher, but figured it was pretty obvious when I specifically mentioned the nonstop talk about the five receivers. Would you like me to list their full legal names and SS numbers to help you crack the code?

Meanwhile we retained Hawkins as a QB2.
Our best WR.
All of our RBs.
All of our OL.
All of our DL.
All of our LBs except one.
All of our DBs.

I don't think you understand the portal if you think losing Nic, Farooq, Dasan and a few guys that were processed to the portal is hemorrhaging. If we had kept Nic, I'd actually argue we had one of the best portal retention rates in the entire country. The only reason we didn't keep Farooq and Dasan is that we didn't think they were worth the offers they received, which is simply responsible spending. If your NFL team never lets it's players hit FA, then you're overpaying, which is one of the biggest sins of roster management.

I never mentioned Dasan. Although it is interesting that after getting him when he was one of the hot names two years ago, we never played him at his natural position and he didn’t have much of a career here.

It’s fine, I’m not going to convince you to acknowledge that things are a mess. You can pretend that there is nothing wrong with the fact that we went into the season thinking we had an elite receiving core, and now will be losing the majority of those guys.

That could be. You stay after him. You offer him money to make him reconsider. The coaches must have had some sense of his limited chances of getting drafted; take advantage of that.

My main point was that it was insane to think we'd be SEC-ready with an inexperienced, unproven QB. I think they could have convinced DG to stay if they'd be proactive about it, but they seemingly didn't try.
The qb was much less of an issue then the decimated c ot and wr room

We replaced one of the best quarterbacks in the country with two guys who were the worst in the conference. On the line, we replaced mediocre players with other mediocre players due to injury. And apparently the WRs are all bums and we should be happy they are leaving. So I’d say the massive downgrade at the most important position in sports was definitely the single biggest issue.

Remember that time you told me you doubted we could retain Burks even after he'd already announced he was coming back?

Or the time you said Soares and Moore were bums?

Or the time you said all of our additions this year were bums and this year would be a disaster?

Transfer portal is tricky, and we all have our misses, but you don't get anything right. Maybe take a breath and talk about something you care about and understand...like Bill Self and KU football.

I'm going to wait for the dust to settle on our WR room before I panic. Retaining Burks was priority #1 and we accomplished that. It's way too early in the transfer portal window to panic about a WR2. Season hasn't even ended.

It is sad to see people sitting on pins and needles as to whether a guy is leaving; and then to see social media erupt with excitement when he stays. I understand the excitement but the fact that this is where we are as a program is very sad.

Funny that you cherry pick a couple times I’ve been wrong. Unlike most of you sunshine pumpers, I admit when I’m wrong. I’ve said about 50 times I was wrong on Moore and Soares. And it’s way too early to say whether I will be proven wrong on this year. I think there is still a good chance our lack of athleticism will be exploited like crazy in conference play. Burks had not announced his plans when I predicted that, so you’re wrong there.

Again, I’d say my track record is much better than yours. Or did you already forget that I spent last season talking about our schedule, and that I was mocked through the first two weeks of March for saying we weren’t a lock for the tournament?

What exactly have you gotten right? Or have I missed all the coaching brilliance of Moser and Venables? Maybe I slept through ncaa tournament games and playoff appearances since Kruger and Riley left.

Are you OK with Hawkins being the QB next year? I wouldn't mind seeing what he can do in an offense tailored to his preferences and the strength of our personnel.
I'm not as optimistic as most of you. And I LOVE Brent Venables. I think he's a thoroughly decent human being, and that's lacking in the coaching profession.

In other news, am I the only one who finds Bob's presence peculiar? Heard him on the radio the other day talking about meeting Arbuckle. I thought to myself, "did Switzer sign off when we hired Coker or Watson Brown?"

Me: Burks is returning
You: I doubt it
**Burks announces his return**
Me: Guess you were wrong
You: No, you're wrong

I used to think you were intelligent but had a personality disorder. The stuff you say is so nonsensical and bizarre that I have to admit I was only half right about you.

Well if it makes you feel better, I’ve never considered you intelligent at all.

The transfer portal is underwhelming at QB to me this year. I think Mateer raises our floor, especially knowing the offense, but he's not all-world, so I wouldn't want to get in a massive bidding war with Miami. If he's getting several million, I'd much rather distribute to the supporting cast, especially OL. I don't think the difference between Arnold, Hawkins, and Mateer is that drastic. All woulda failed with this group on offense.

I love Brent. I don't know if he'll succeed at the level he needs to, but I desperately want him to. It was a terrible year, but that Alabama game gave me a lot of hope. We lined up and whipped a team from the first play we couldn't have dreamed of even beating in the Riley era. The defense went to new height this year, which I fully believe Venables can maintain, given his track record as the best defensive coach in college this decade.

The questions is the offense. Had our offense improved this year, our offense and defense would have improved every year of BV's tenure. Instead the offense was an absolutely trainareck. If we even had an average offense this year, I think we're in the playoffs. I don't see a path to our offense being elite, but I'd be shocked if it wasn't at least average.

My only question about players entering the portal from the playoff teams is can we still get them into school for the spring? In other words, if we target guys on the National Championship winning team, can they get into school by the spring semester deadline? Getting these guys in for spring practice would be of utmost importance I would think.

I'm pretty sure UT did with the Bama WR last year.

Mateer is coming to OU ..
