OT: Football Talk

Stop believing everything you read. The fact that you two are literally posting different ideas here shows that NOBODY really knows what is going on or why/how this is playing out. OUI is the biggest click-bate site around.

How is Gentry getting pushed out? He's literally our starting CB right now.

He needs to stay healthy, but it's not like he's sitting out with an earache or a charlie horse.
He might be getting a reduction or I would not be surprised if he portals

There are many stories out there about Stone's situation. An insider I trust offered the following: His deal was reworked so that the base was lower but with incentives he could make more. I think this is not only reasonable in this instance, but is an approach we should adopt with all players going forward. I think every program should, for that matter. Enough of five-stars underachieving and still getting a mammoth paycheck.

Another insider that I know a bit less about said that Stone was ok with the change--that he wanted to show that he was ready and able to contribute more as a player, which, if true, speaks very well of him--but that his parents balked at it and are leaning on him to transfer.

I am not an insider and don't claim to know the truth, but the above--especially the first bit--comes from what I know to be reasonably reliable sources.

Deeply troubled by the news Stone was leaving. Having said that, they've seen him in person for a year, and if they don't think he's worth the check, these are the type of moves that need to be made. There is absolutely nothing about the last two years to make me believe that we aren't willing to allocate large sums of money to defensive players when we feel it's warranted. I do hope we find a middle ground and Stone returns.

Tricky situation -- would you pay Stone more than the guy who outplayed him (Jayden Jackson)? I believe that even with the reported 50% paycut, Stone would still be making more than him.

The real answer is to keep both (and Damonic) if you can.

I'm sure Jackson got a pay increase this year. tOSU was trying to throw money at him earlier.

Personally, I'd rather have Stone than Williams. Nothing against Williams, he is a very good player, but I thought he underperformed a bit last year. Only one sack from a Junior that started all season. Was great against the run, but disappeared too much for my liking. Stone had as many sacks as Williams. Jackson had one more as a true freshman. Halton had 5x as many as Williams.

You lose Stone now, then you lose Williams and Halton to graduation after this year, and all of the sudden it's just Jackson. We need to keep Stone so that we're pairing him and Jackson together in 2026. Can't assume we'll be able to consistently replicate how we landed those guys (Williams was a big Portal grab, Stone a local 5* kid, and Jackson a 3* kid that played with our local 5* kid and has overachieved). I'm a big believer in Bates, but he has to have the talent on hand to mold. We finally have SEC level talent at DT. I'd rather we not start backsliding now.

I really doubt the OU staff lets Stone go because they don't think VERY highly of him. Can't be so stubborn with your pay scale or whatever that you let a talent like Stone walk. It's not his fault he wasn't on the field more last year. He doesn't play Jackson's position, and Williams was/is always going to play a lot because he's getting paid too. Stone easily could have contributed more the last half of the season last year if not in a stacked room. That isn't his fault. And offering him performance bonuses this year when again he's probably going to have to come off the bench, that really isn't fair either, unless those performance bonuses take that into account. Again, I think Stone is probably equally as good as Williams right now. Jackson isn't the comp. Jackson is the big run stuffer at NT.

You have no idea what these crazy kids are asking for

In january i have no problem with any kid shopping for the best paying job they can. My problem with stone doing it now is he agreed to a deal for this year. He id wrong to breach that deal. Good deal, bad deal, more pay or less pay, the issue is he agreed to a deal. It is wrong to go back on that deal. Ou relied on his word not to find a suitable replacement for him and pored a lot of resources into him from january to now.

Nobody ever said doing the right thing wouldn’t or didn’t come with a price. Usually does. A man honors his word. I would have wished david well if he left before agreeing to a new deal. Now i am ashamed of him if he leaves.

The fact that he needs or can get more money if he leaves misses the point for me.

I strongly believe david was going to be our secong best defensive lineman this year behind halton. But if he plans on leaving unkess he doesn’t get a new deal. I say let him go. And even if it means losing games. I will be disappointed in ou if they give in to extortion.

I saw Gerald McCoy going at it with some of our rabid fans who were bashing DS on social media. McCoy and one of Ds's family members were saying yesterday he didn't want to leave and was really struggling with the decision. Apparently, his parents were more upset with the money offer than he was. GMac was telling Sooner fans it wasn't a lock he would leave, and more than 50/50 he would stay....

I'm not one to get on social media and "publicly" rip kids, but they are getting paid a lot of money, so they are going to have to get used to it to some extent. Sorry, comes with the territory. You want an adult job, you gotta take the bad with the good.

I get your point, but it didn't just start when they started getting paid legally. Social media is a cesspool for cowards who hide behind keyboards anonymously.

I don’t disagree.

But 95% of those clowns would leave their jobs for a $2.00 an hour raise and not even give 2 weeks.

That’s the problem with our “fans” half said he sucked anyways… they are clowns.

Anyone that said he sucked is either a moron or was just "mad venting" and spewing nonsense.

He was (and still is, to some extent) in a pretty loaded room last year. And DT's in the BV defense are never going to put up huge stats. I thought Stone flashed quite a bit in the second half of last season. We just didn't need to play him more, or I think he could have done more.

players have no loyalty or love for a school anymore. it's all about the benjamins....
so when they leave or threaten to leave for more money.....they're going to get blasted by the fans...
just how it is from now on.

It's always been that way before the money became visible, before the internet and social media. When a player leaves, fans blast them. When a player joins us after leaving another school, we defend them and embrace them. That's the nature of the beast.

Wasn’t it his mom that wanted him to go to other schools out of high school? Seems like he likes OU, but mom/family don’t.
