OU Coaches - Conference Record 1st Five Seasons

Heck, none of us know which one is right. I just think it's a stretch to say those guys were OBVIOUSLY that bad and that JC shoulda known. Not saying you are completely off base on that assessment, but I think it's fair to say OU coaches and programs below the top 10 programs have taken LOTS of "chances" on kids without this kind of "luck".

Do you remember us fighting a bunch of top tier schools for them? Why do you think that was?

The lone exception was Willie, but he was also probably the one of the three recruits that had the most baggage. I know KU wanted him, so I do give credit there. But most of the top schools didn't push these guys very hard. The Dukes, NC's, UK's.....UCLA.....UCONN except for maybe Willie. None of those guys were players for anybody but Willie.

i still say that if Capel would have passed on these guys when we had just lost blake and taylor and if we had known about it, you same people complaining that he signed them would be saying he is an idiot

Look, I TRIED to concede some of what you say, but even THAT doesn't appease you.

For Pete's sake, you are just grabbing stuff out the of air.

Do you have bad memory? Let's look back at the year TMG and Tiny signed. OU was coming off an E8 performance and had the CONSENSUS POY. MANY thought WW had a chance to be a POY candidate the next year. OU was on a roll. Any decent job opening that came along had Capel's name attached to it (right or wrong). Needless to say he was a hot commodity. Capel is/was known to be a good recruiter. OT was known to be an INCREDIBLE recruiter (clean or not).

Based on all of that, OU landed these guys. THAT'S all we know. Anything you say contrary to that is just a guess. Sheesh...

I think this is more true than anyone will be willing to admit.

Not for me. I haven't followed recruiting of any sort since James Hale used to pimp all the Gibbs, Schnelly, and Blake recruiting classes as the best ever and then proclaimed Stoops first class as marginal.

I've never visited the recruiting forum, well maybe once, even on this board. Everything I know about recruiting, I get from the people on this board mentioning who we are after and who else is recruiting them.

Having said that, the only player of the malcontents I watched a video about was TMG, and I questioned why they never showed him on defense, or passing the ball. It was all him shooting, which is really not the goal of a PG.

I had never heard of Tiny, and the only thing I knew about WW was that he left prep school, went to multiple HS's, and had a falling out with the kid at Arkansas.

So, I can say for certain, I wouldn't have complained because I honestly didn't follow it. Just like now we have 3 or 4 offers out for a PG...I'm guessing we will get one of them, but if he's a bust, I won't remember any of the others other than Guerrero who is mentioned multiple times a day. Basically, I won't know the difference of if the one we got was the worst. But, I will know if he's not playing defense, or making good passes, or anything else his coach should be instructing him to do.

Recruiting rankings are irrelevant. Based on on the court evidence OU's had 2 great recruits from Capel since he's been here. TMG was a 5-9 2 guard. Yet he thought he was a pro. 5-9 2 guards don't exist in the NBA. He had no point guard skills to speak of. Warren has/had better point guard instincts than TMG. And Tiny Gallon who was skilled but weighed way too much, and was too slow and at times thought he was a guard. He was a long ways away from being a great post player and it's why he won't make the NBA for a long time. He needed about 2 or 3 years in college.

I don't get the hype with Mason-Griffin at all. I think we have about 2 or 3 2 guards on our roster right now better than him. And Blair is a better point that he was. And look what he's doing in the NBADL. NOTHING!

I'm not sure I disagree with ANYTHING you say (I DO think TMG had more of a chance to be a pretty good PG if he had stayed in college, but who knows), but the guy I'm arguing this point with is trying to insinuate we only got these HIGHLY RATED (no matter what you think about their ability) because everyone else backed off. I think its fair to say that's not true.

Stop taking whatever you're taking. Now.

TMG averaged nearly 15 ppg, shot 43% from three and had nearly a 2-1 assist- to-turnover ratio.

Blair averages 7 ppg, shoots 25% from three and has already committed more turnovers than TMG did all last year.

TMG could have been one of the best ever at OU if he had been right mentally.

The only thing I will say in Nick's defense is, I can see where MANY coaches would take Blair knowing what we know now...

In college...the best PGs don't usually score first. They get the team involved which Is the one thing Blair can do.

Look at Rickey grace and Quannis White, the 2 PGs who led us to the final 4. They didn't score until teams were so concerned with everyone else that the PG was open.

Now, TMG had to score last year because nobody else could, however, TMG was more of a 2G and not a PG, but had to play PG.

TMG shot the ball a bunch more than anyone on roster. He took 369 shots. Andrew Fitzgerald is really the only one anywhere close to TMG in that number he'll end around 310 or so by years end. TMG made 39% of his shots. For a big man Fitzgerald's shooting percentage is a little low at 49%. But not too bad. Cade Davis has taken 272 shots so far this year. He may end up close to 300 shots. He is making 43% of his shots.

I think good point guards score, assist and defend. TMG did two of the three well, obviously he was a horrendous defensive player.

Mason-Griffin average right at five assists per game.

Yea, they're going to the extreme on him a bit. He IS a PG with PG skills. He's just a really good scorer.

I'm just not sure what we got with TMG (the entire package) is worth the hassle. NOW, if he had bought in and TRIED to play defense (because I think he was more than capable at it), then I believe he MIGHT have made and NBA roster after his Jr or Sr year...but he woulda had to make HUGE improvements at the defensive end.

This is a friendly reminder for those posters who might be having second thoughts about Jeff coming back next season. Based on his 5 year record at Oklahoma, Jeff does not deserve to be back for a sixth season.
