**********OU vs Kansas Game Thread**********

Lon gave us a hint last week about this team. Could his experience as a head coach hide our actual problems as a team. I guess we are seeing what he met. This is crazy to watch but, this has to happen to get us back to where we belong.

OU needs a player that can create points and just doesn't have it

I agree but I also don't think we run an offense that tries to help that fact. We run our offense like we do have the guys that can create for stationary shooters.

We need balance. Pledger is fine, he'd be a GREAT OU player on other OU teams, but he can't create his own shots. You stick him on the floor with Grooms, a guy that scares nobody offensively, and Cam, who in his current state is a below average player, and they simply key on Pledger, and we can't do anything about it.

I like Grooms. He is certainly better than Blair. That said, you cannot win again the good teams with pg's like Grooms, unless you are stacked everywhere else. We currently are not stacked.

And guard depth in general kills us. We don't have a single true guard on the bench. Not one. I'm guessing there may not be another team in the country that is in that position. Think about that.....how many D1 schools don't have a single 2/3 on the bench? We make do with a backup pg (Blair), and a guy that really doesn't have a position, but would be best as a small 4 (Neal).

I'm probably guilty of getting ahead of myself with this team, but it LOOKED like they were going to play the old Kelvin style that allowed less talented teams to overachieve. They probably aren't to that point yet. You can see the effort. You can see the coaching. But the toughness, the intensity 100% of the time, and the overall talent, just isn't there yet.

Spot on post! I couldn't agree more. :clap

The rebuilding process is going to be very painful for us.

The rebuilding process is going to be very painful for us.

Why? We get help next year, and in two years, most of this roster will be gone. LK will have a chance to have nearly 100% his roster in for that 3rd year.

We all don't know how these kids that are hear now are going to respond the rest of the year. Kids coming in from HS are not always going to produce, we saw that the last 2 years. I will have a wait and see attitude. We should have responded allot better after the Mizzu game and we didn't....

The problem is OU will lose Pledger,Grooms,Fitz and Osby

I think our lack of size and athleticism puts us in a position to have to play smarter and more focused than the better teams in order to compete. I think the effort is there today, but we seemed to lose focus to start the second half and it killed us IMO.

Our talent doesn't even compare to KU right now. Either the game plan or players together just didn't do a good job today of playing tough and even off the ball.

You know it's not going your way when you finally get open shots and can't hit them.

I disagree about our overall talent. In most aspects of the game, we compare just fine to KU, and the other Big 12 schools not named Mizzou and Baylor. The biggest difference is that we don't have very good ballhandlers. That is something that gets overlooked, even by me. We have one dude that has + handles, and that is Grooms. Think back to Hollis' teams. Hollis had good handles. White had good handles. Ere had better handles then Crocker/Cam (our starting 3 for much of the past 7 years). That is why I think the guys like Parker and Woodard are so important. Those guys, along with Hield and Hornbeak, improve our "handles" quite a bit. That is probably our biggest problem right now.

For anyone that follows recruiting, are Hield, Hornbeak, and Henry good shooters/scorers?

While I do agree on ball handles, I do see things that is not happening with players that I believe have talent enough to drive and dish the ball. There is just something wrong with Cam right now. He has no confidence to use his leaping and skill level to drive and get better shots. RO is still getting used to playing all the team and looks to be up and down. Fitz gets everything out of what he has. WE don't have a guard that can do things with the ball. Lon is really limited to do what he wants with the ball. We will see if he adjust to what he has...So, I believe in a way it is up to Lon to make the right decisions to get us back to winning and having a chance the rest of the season.

I am no expert but both Hield and Hornbeak are top 100 Sg that score a lot in high school. They will definitely help this team.

layup for Kansas, layup for Kansas, layup for Kansas, layup for Kansas. Where'd the defense go!?

I was only listening to the game but I noticed this. After we played good half court defense and forced them into poor shooting for them we gave them this crap.

True. And it may get worse before it gets better. We just have to hang in there.

The rebuilding process is going to be very painful for us.

Not nearly as painful as the last couple of years. At least we know we have someone that will do something about this mess and we'll be better for it in the long run.

Agreed on the last couple of years. I really want to see how Lon brings us out of these last 2 blow outs. OSU game is a must win at the time...
