Game Recap

Game Story

NORMAN, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- No. 17 Oklahoma made sure Gabe
Muoneke did not have another big game and J.R. Raymond scored 25
points to lead the Sooners to an 83-59 Big 12 Conference rout of
13th-ranked Texas.

Eduardo Najera recorded his eighth double-double in 11 games
with 18 points and a season-high 16 rebounds for the Sooners
(17-3, 5-2 Big 12), who avenged a 79-66 loss at Texas on January
15.

"There was a lot of intensity out there," Najera said. "We
talked about what we wanted to do all week. We wanted a lot of
intensity, enthusiasm and emotion. We knew if we did that we
would win, and that's exactly what we did."

Muoneke matched a career high with 30 points in that contest but
was held to six tonight, tying a season low.

"The second time you play a team, you know what adjustments to
make," Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson said. "Players win games
and what J.R. and Victor (Avila) did tonight was special. ... I
am very happy for Victor. He's been through hard times and his
confidence has to be sky-high."

Chris Mihm scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Texas
(14-6, 6-2), which had a three-game winning streak stopped and
fell three spots into fourth place in the conference.

"We need to take a better look at our post defense," Longhorns
coach Rick Barnes said. "We haven't played very well in the
past few games. With Eduardo being the player he is and J.R.
being the player he is, they just did what they needed to do
tonight."

Muoneke picked up two fouls, including a technical, in the
game's first two minutes and never was a factor, going 2-of-8
from the field and 2-of-6 at the line in 16 minutes.

Kelley Newton hit a follow shot and a 3-pointer to highlight an
11-0 run that gave Oklahoma a 27-17 lead with 5:15 left before
halftime.

Texas got within 29-25 on two free throws by William Clay, but
the Sooners closed the first half with an 11-3 burst and took a
40-28 lead into the locker room.

"We dug ourselves into a hole in the first half," Mihm said.
"They played harder and kicked our butts tonight. You have to
credit the Oklahoma defense, they did a great job. Our guards
played a good game, but our post defense was lacking."

The Longhorns got no closer than 10 points in the second half
and the final margin represented Oklahoma's biggest lead.

Avila chipped in 13 points off the bench and Nolan Johnson
scored 10 for the Sooners, who shot 53 percent (31-of-58) and
had a 42-35 rebounding edge.

Ivan Wagner and Darren Kelly had nine points apiece for Texas,
which made 34 percent of its shots (21-of-61).

"We forced Texas to do things they normally wouldn't do,"
Sampson said. "All I know is, I wouldn't want to be the team
that Texas has to play next."

I would suggest using this to take your mind off of the present. :D

Watching this game just infuriates me more. Look at the commitment Sampson's players had to defense and ball security. Why doesn't Capel preach those virtues?

This year certainly makes you miss and appreciate Eduardo even more.

Victor would surprise me every now and then with a big game. I still remember him for all those travels trying to do back to the basket post moves though...:)
