Austin was a great player but I wouldn’t necessary say his style of equals wins .
OU did have the best win of the season without him on the court .

That's how I feel. Sometimes stats and accolades don't tell the entire story. And before anybody jumps to his defense, I'm not saying he is a bad player. He clearly isn't. But if people are picking teams, he isn't one of the top 10 guards taken in college basketball last year, regardless of his stats.

Also, we can't have it both ways. If Reaves was so good, and Manek was so good, and Lon was such a great coach, and we're all excited about Gibson and Harkless, and Hill has all this potential, and Harmon was so good as well, why was our record what it was the past couple of seasons?

The fact is, either Lon wasn't doing as good a job as some suggested, OR some combination of those players weren't as good as some around here make them out to be. It has to be one or the other.

Not a big deal, and I'm trying to look forward, but jeez, we didn't just put up the records we've put up the last 2 and last 4 years while having all of these talented basketball players and coaches.

Well stated. Couldn't agree more.

We win 10 less games without him.

Haha.....OK .I’m sure Lon would have had only 6 wins this season without Reaves . He was hands down our most talented player but I don’t know if I would even give him the MVP , Harkless might get it .

Ou was playing its best ball when he was scoring less and team was locked down defensively .

Sure. Scoring less and avg 14-6-6

Not gonna argue.

You are ignoring the fact that Manek, Reaves and Williams missed games due to COVID-19. Did Hill miss games as well? I think Manek missed the most and after he came back it was mentioned that he was having problems with the lingering side effects of the virus. Up until the team was hit by COVID they were playing well. After everyone returned they had a difficult time reestablishing the chemistry they had before.

I'm just excited at the prospect of a big man we can throw the ball to in the post who can make a move and score. We haven't had that since Blake (and possibly Doolittle if you consider him a big man).

Lots of teams were hit hard by Covid, notably Baylor. I don't really buy this excuse much. If we had a difficult time reestablishing chemistry then that was a coaching issue.

Are we gonna ignore Thomas in 2014/2015?

Reaves averaged right at 20 points a game in all of OU’s losses other than Tech obviously.

Reaves scoring didn’t dictate wins for this team.

Perhaps because the players around him didn’t carry their weight? Manek slumped terribly. Harkless and Gibson tailed off. Kur disappeared offensively. Williams struggled after Covid till the last couple games of the year. If Reaves had “just” been a scorer, sure, maybe you could argue his style didn’t lead to wins. But when you lead a team in scoring, assists, and boards, it’s hard to see what part of that “style” isn’t conducive to winning.

It's not just about scoring for AR this past year. He was the pg. The most important person on the floor he dictates the pace and how the game is going to be played. He was excellent at getting others involved and making plays.

Going into the ORU Florida game I believe, Kenny Smith made a comment on TNT that's Abmas was the best player on the court and because he also happened to be the pg it made ORU live for the reasons I posted above. He decides what the game will look like. This is how I feel about AR

I'm going to run my head through a wall if we don't stop arguing about Reaves. I realize he was probably the most divisive player in OU history but he's gone now. Let's focus on the guys still here and the new guys coming in.

We aren't the only team that had guys miss games. Overall, I'd say we turned out okay. Baylor fricking stopped playing basketball for like 3-4 weeks during the middle of the season and still managed to win a NC.

KU had guys out. Every team had guys out to some extent.

Man, if we could get Bryson Williams and one of goldwire, thompson, or harmon, we could be really salty. You start Williams and Groves together and then keep one of them in at the 5 the whole game. Always have a veteran, well-rounded 5 in to help run the offense and anchor the defense.

Baylor wasn't the same until the tournament. Manek was pretty good at the end of the season and the team was really good in the tournament.

from the kstate loss on Reaves averaged 16 attempts a game and shot around 30% .
I don’t think it’s coincidence they closed out the season with a 2-6 record and easily their worst stretch of basketball .
Again Reaves was easily their best player but I don’t think that “style” of basketball will always equate wins .
