We've all read all the things Coach did to try to get through to the players who didn't buy into the 'team first' concept. Is there anything else that could have been tried?

He should have taken away their hip hop music?

Sorry, Coolm made me post that.

Sitting them on the bench. Giving them the hook for playing crappy defense.

Could have taken a much more harsh stance early on I guess. I think that he thought the team would eventually come together once the season wore on instead of the exact opposite.

True, the normal progression for freshmen & jc players is that they don't begin to really 'get it' until after the first of January.

been a better judge of character during the recruiting process, instead of just going for whatever McDonald's AAs were going to save him some mean posts on recruiting message baords?

Maybe he should be a coach first, and a buddy second. It's a mistake many young teachers and/or coaches make...

Do we actually know that this is what is happening or do we just assume it because he is young?
You are correct. No one knows what was tried and what wasn't. The only thing that can be corrected is what happens in the future. I know that football coaches often go visit other coaches in the summer to learn from them. They take a few days to pick their brains and learn as much as they can. I would like to see Capel and his staff go visit a coach like Izzo. It sure couldn't hurt.

The problem is, he sits a couple of people down or suspends them for a game and the players who replace him have also already been in the doghouse with their own off the court antics. It just became a do your time early and play late thing with the players on the team...

based on some quick internet message board feedback, it shows that yes, in fact, there were many other things he could have/ should have done.

I heard some commentary about the teams like Cornell, Northern Iowa and Butler being so successful in the tournament. The commentator said it is a side effect of the 'one and done' rule. He said that y and large, the 'one and done' rule only affects the 'BCS' schools. The others keep doing their thing with players who assume from day 1 that they will be in school for 4 years. By the time Northern Iowa meets KU in the tournament, they have a more seasoned and experienced team than a team like KU. KU may have more talent but NI has the edge in experience.

Add a young coach into the equation and you have a perfect storm.
