If OU goes 0-16 in conference play (which I predict will happen) then Joe C. must make a change.

I'm fine with that, but the OP said "today" as in January 8th 2010. He won't, and shouldn't be fired today

I think it is the question. The cases of mid-season firings are few and far between and usually involve legal/ethical/substance abuse problems. Not just really bad coaching.
Again there's one off the top of my head, Quin Snyder.

Should the Tiny and Coach O situation not be considered as such?

Not in my book. There were rumors about Quin & recreational drugs and Quin and extramarital affairs.

You don't gain anything by firing a coach in the middle of the season. If you have a talented team that is under achieving, a mid season coaching change might iight a fire under your team. I doubt that is this case here.

Ridiculous to consider firing Capel at this time.

It's easy to call for a guy's job without determining who will replace him. Who do you propose OU hires and who do you think would actually take the job? It's more than just firing a coach because you're dissatisfied with the program's lack of success.

hell if he goes 5-11 he should be fired
If he gets this team to 5 wins in conference its actually a good sign. Because that means he found a way to maximize the talent level of this team and a defined successful offensive system would be in place.

Which means that if guys like Osby and Goff (hopefully Cezar as well) come in as impact players the team would be in position to win about 10-12 conference games (remember going to 18 games next year).

I agree...which is why my opinion is fire him if we win less than 4, keep him if we win 4 or more.

This team will be 0-16 in conference play with him, so what would it hurt to get rid of him and look another direction! Heck let Kellen run the team. All I am saying why not just end it now, it is not going to get better. Capel is way, way over his head and looks lost out there! Capel has destroyed a once proud program - this team is awful but it is not the players fault!

Firing a collegiate coach mid season accomplishes nothing and would be a stupid move for multiple reasons:

1.) Kills your recruiting, basically your school's brand is off the market for another two to three months.

2.) No stability in the program with an interim coach.

3.) If Joe C is looking to make a change, he is already putting feelers out there to agents and representatives, he doesn't need to fire Capel to do this.

4.) Any coaches who would be possible candidates are too busy during conference season to be shopping for jobs. Personally, I don't want to hire someone who is willing to sell their own team's season short by not devoting their undivided attention to anything but the current season.

This isn't professional sports, completely different scenario.

campbest "This isn't professional sports, completely different scenario."

Good thing, because it is an awful product!

For me this answer is simple. Since we didnt fire him after last season (which I thought we should) we most definitely need to wait till the end of the season.

The only way he saves his job is if he has some good recruits coming in that would consider transfering if we brought in a new coach...so far we have osby, who cannot transfer due to already using his redshirt...and we have goff who most likely wouldnt transfer because its not in his best interest

So in my opinion he needs to sign a really good guy that would leave if he leaves.

60% say fire him immediately. I voted no even though I started the thread. Pretty sad situation. We suck so bad that 60% of our fans would terminate the coach immediately. Obviously this is not a scientific poll but it is still a bit telling.

Personally, my opinion (and I know nobody at OU and/or on this board really cares) is that if things are not resolved by the end of next season, OU needs a new AD. That may sound drastic to some but I just don't give Joe C. all the credit that most fans give him. I personally think Boren is the man responsible for most of the good things that have happened at OU over the last several years.

My computer screen says 60% of respondents say no to firing him immediately.

Would love to hear this.

40% is still a really high number for firing him.

What is there to hear? I just don't think Joe C. hung the moon. He does a good job but Boren raised the money. Boren made the commitment to improve the football team. Boren controls the regents or more appropraitely negotiates that political mine field. Boren hired Joe C. Boren has improved academics at OU. Boren has done a great job at OU.

I think OU will face a much bigger challenge replacing David Boren than Joe C. or any coach (including Stoops). I do not look forward to the day when David Boren retires. I have not agreed with every decision Boren has made but he has done an outstanding job at OU.

No. Firing Capel today would serve no useful purpose – and would do much harm to OU's reputation, and potentially any current recruiting. I still believe Joe C. will give the coach one more year. Then, if he can't get things turned around, he'll have to go.
