What is there to hear? I just don't think Joe C. hung the moon. He does a good job but Boren raised the money. Boren made the commitment to improve the football team. Boren controls the regents or more appropraitely negotiates that political mine field. Boren hired Joe C. Boren has improved academics at OU. Boren has done a great job at OU.
I think OU will face a much bigger challenge replacing David Boren than Joe C. or any coach (including Stoops). I do not look forward to the day when David Boren retires. I have not agreed with every decision Boren has made but he has done an outstanding job at OU.
Boren has done a superb job, he is a large reason why OU has made so many improvements in the academic and athletic landscapes. However, under your definition, no AD deserves much credit regardless of the institution because the school presidents do everything you mentioned. Not Foley at Florida, not Gene Smith at Ohio Sate, Dobbs at UT or Barnhardt at Kentucky. The reason OU has been so successful (as with the aformentioned programs) is that the school presidents allow their ADs to do their job...very little micro-managing. Are there certain initiatives which need approval? Absolutely, but most of the work done in the athletic department falls under the jurisdiction of the AD. OU's mens basketball is one of the few sports which is "down" right now and I am sure at the right time if a change is needed it will be made.
You don't continue to have successful fiscal years without competent leadership in the athletic department and someone who knows how to manage a variety of coaches in their different sports. If you told Boren that Castiglione isn't as valuable as he is perceived, he would probably laugh in your face.
