The Downside of Lon Kruger

Agree with you completely SK. I was never a Capel fan. We all knew Blake was special and that is the only reason we won those 2 years.

I disagree slightly. I think AJ, Longar and T. Griffin learned a lot from Sampson. I think Ryan Wright learned a lot at UCLA. I think Cade Davis was a kid that cared and worked as hard as anyone. I think Omar Leary was a good kid that worked really hard. When you have enough positive influences in a group they will silence the negative gusy and make them work hard.

Now I think all of those guys succeeded in spite of Capel. I suspect they liked Capel but liking someone doesn't mean they are a good coach or boss.

Do you mean 3 or 4, or are you saying 75 percent? ;)

:clap

Both, actually. :chestram2:

Scrybe: you were one of the ones who didn't care much for me here, but now we get along quite well. I'd love to buy you a beer sometime and put a face with the name. If you are ever in Kansas City, drop me an inbox if you have time. :woot

OU fans whine more about Capel than IU fans whine about Kelvin Sampson.

Indiana went to the 2nd round of the NCAA the one full season he was there, and lost in the first round the year he was fired. Not quite the toilet bowl Caple left us in. All their problems winning were under Crean's watch and last year was the first time Crean had them in the NCAA tourny

I'll take you up on that, Booger. They do sell Bud in K.C., don't they?

WHAT? IU went a combined 28-66 after a 1st round exit in Sampson's final year.
OU went 42-52 after an Elite 8 appearance.

Exactly?

IU didn't struggle under Kelvin, and I don't think it's fair to give Crean a pass his first few years on campus there either.

OU's struggles were while Capel was on campus.

I like Kruger as a coach...but you guys are doing the exact same thing with him as you did with Capel.

Capel Kruger
06-07: 16-15 11-12: 15-16
07-08: 23-12(2nd Round) 12-13: 20-10(incomplete)
08-09: 30-6(elite 8) 13-14: ??????

If we don't make the NCAA/NIT next year, you guys will turn on him too.

Not at all. Next year has always been, in my eyes, the year he gets a pass. Our roster was such a mess, we always knew we would lose a lot this year. LK is certainly bringing in the talent to win and make the NCAA Tournament, but next year me might be a little young/inexperienced.

He has us primed to be a winning team going forward after that though. And I'm certainly not writing off the postseason next year. With Booker, I'd actually say we're a bubble team on paper from day 1.

Nonsense, as WT says.

In the 07-08 season, we had 10 losses with a double figure margin and half of those were over 20 point losses including a 30 point loss to Texas in the Big 12 tourney semis and a 30 point loss to Louisville in the 2nd round of the big dance. That's completely unacceptable.

This year, we've had 1 loss that was by a big margin and that was the game at ISU and we all know we caught them on a hot night or else that game would have been a 7-9 point loss. Not to mention we beat them by 17 in Norman just a few weeks later.

Also, not to mention LK won't get us on probation and his recruiting classes won't be utter dogcrap like Capel's. (not saying the recruits that made it and stuck were dogcrap but the recruits who didn't make it or didn't stick caused those classes to be dogcrap)

OU's struggles were while Capel was on campus.

Crean inherited 1 scholarship player and had to cobble together his own recruiting class late in the game. To say the cupboard was bare would be overstating the talent level at IU when he arrived. He was playing intramural guys off the bench his first season.

Capel did more for the university than Kelvin did at IU and the 3 years post the tournament weren't nearly as bad as IU's 3 straight years of missing the tournament. So, as to my original point, Kelvin put IU in far worse shape than Capel did here (while having less success at the university) and yet OU fans complain about Capel more than IU fans complain about Kelvin.

I was going to add that the first season was probably an exception. But he had more talent than his record indicated in years 2 and 3. Seems to me that much like Capel, Crean can only win when he has a roster stacked with super talented kids.

Success isn't measured simply by comparing the greatest achievement that both accomplished. Kelvin put two very good teams on the floor at IU. Capel put one very good team, and needed one of the best college players in recent years, as a sophomore, to do it.

But if you think Capel's OU resume is better than Kelvin's IU resume, knock yourself out.

Not to mention if Sampson hadn't recruited lightly recruited Taylor, BG would have never come to OU, IMO.

I might be able to explain that. It's doubtfull that any Indiana fans showup on their message boards defending Kelvin and knocking the current coach relative to the past coach.

It is my opinion that the Capel bashing starts when the Capel fan club chimes in knocking Kruger. Without that, probably not much would be said about the guy.

Capel did nothing for the University. Anybody would have won with Blake. He cheated on Gallon (he knew about that) and wasted a years recruiting budget chasing Harrison Barnes and Terrence Jones and we OU fans end up with Nick Thompson.

In some ways Capel was just as bad for OU basketball as John Blake was for OU football.
