The Porter Moser stat I keep thinking about....

Before his concussion he improved quite a bit imo, mostly on the defensive end. He was starting to take minutes away from Goldwire before the concussion. Best ball handler & passer on the team, 1st game back was against the best defensive team in the country. Freshmen with turnover problems is nothing new, I think he'll be a good player if he stays 4 years.

Did you see him getting abused on defense last night?

Nope, don't have ESPN+ and since I saw the score I won't watch it on YouTube. He's not a good defender yet, has great instincts, but ball watches & gambles too much now. But he has gotten way better on that end from the beginning of the season. Also last night was the 1st time in 3 weeks he got major minutes since his concussion.

He still has to vastly improve, but I think he has the ability to do so.

I'm in the middle on this argument. Cortes has shown flashes that make you think he could be really good. On the other hand, he is way too loose with the ball. You absolutely can not have a PG who is TO prone. He did not look good on defense last night either (got blown by several times). He also needs to shoot the ball more.

I do like his ball-handling WHEN he plays under control....which is only some of the time. At certain times, guys may not be ready for his passes, but he also needs to play within the confines of the offensive system...which may not be the best fit for his style. And when he drives and makes one of his across the perimeter passes, I have to use restraint from chucking my beverage at the TV.

If you look at minutes played/game averages, Cortes is a much better shooter from anywhere on the court compared to Goldwire. He’s also a better rebounder. He has much better vision and I would say from what I’ve seen, many of his turnovers are a result of players not being ready when he passes the ball. This obviously would improve the more he played with those guys.

His upside is tremendous IMO but he has to play to get better.

CJ Noland’s numbers are better also. I really hope we can keep both these guys next year.

I just don't see the upside with cortez. Solid role player? yes. But nothing more than that.

I'm not optimistic on noland either. Dude needs to get his body right

I like both. I think cortes can be a good pass 1st pg, whether that's starter or in the top 7. I was honestly surprised he got as many minutes as he did this year. I thought he'd be a role player as a sophomore, fight for a starting spot as a junior, and start as a senior.

Noland I think can be really good overall, I have no doubt he'll get his body right. He actually moves really well considering. I think he'll start next year if he stays.

I mentioned it in another thread: Noland was a top 100 recruit. He's a true freshman. Not only does he deserve more time to grow, we shouldn't expect too much next season from the other pair of top 100 players we have coming in. They may dominate from the jump, but that rarely happens. Hopefully, we won't see insinuations this time next year about their attitudes and plans to transfer.

Noland is interesting... usually 18 year old's don't have bodies like that. The dude is in basketball practice every day, and has been playing hardcore sports for years... Might be 350 pounds if he wasn't. He's just a big dude.

He definitely needs to cut some weight. He plays okay with it but could be much better if he lost some.

He was a top 100 recruit in the country with this body.

Could someone please name a single play this season that has gone badly because of his weight -- or just one that could have gone better if he'd been 10 pounds lighter?

I want quick/athletic off guards who defend, shoot, and can jump.

I guess heild, woodward, and cousins spoiled us, gym rats who improved each year. I like Hill's effort but he shoots from his chin still and can't hit a 3 and its his third year correct?

I guess I don't understand the constant commenting about Noland's size. Yes, he's somewhat bulkier and does still have some of that 'baby fat' which will melt away over the next four years, but I don't think he's huge like the commentators say. I haven't seen him appear slow or sluggish on defense the few times I've been able to tolerate watching a whole game. I really do like Cortes and Noland as players and think if they stick it out they could be great four year players for us. Not so sold on the other freshman, Mason though. I primarily believe we need more talented height on this roster in order to be more competitive. Any idea on anyone coach has his eyes on for next year? I'm assuming he intends to add, that is...

That is an impossible thing to answer.

And just because he was a top 100 recruit doesn't mean he can't shed some lbs

So you have no evidence to justify calling for him to lose weight? it just ...I dunno, bugs you that he's not skinny?

He gets beat defensively a lot, part is being a freshman, part is being in below average shape for a D1 player

He gets beat about 20 times less than Jacob and Tanner Groves, who play a lot.

Does is offend me? No. But why would we not want an athlete at his prime weight for competition. Honestly I’m not even sure how to respond to this. Just a weird hill to stand on.

It is perhaps a weird hill to stand on, but his weight also a weird nit to pick. Noland's purported excess poundage ranks approximately 372nd on the list of things wrong with this team but it's brought up constantly.
