this is a harsh board gary i have been a head high school basketball coach for 27 years and asst at swosu for 1 i just threw my thoughts about capel out there and got personally insulted bad i lost all respect for the majority of the members on this board i know more about bball then 9 out 10 of everyone on here and i got proof with 4 state titles as a head coach

Don't worry about it. They treat me worse. If you want to continue to participate, ignore them or respond in kind.

There's no place for the personal stuff. I disagreed with you about Capel but discussion about his time here kind of strikes a nerve in both camps. I'm just ready to move on. BTW, a late welcome to the board. If you are who I think you are, you are one helluva high school basketball coach and I have admired you from afar. My father was a high school official for 25 years or so based out of Lawton and is also a big fan.

Coach, your assessment of Capels recruiting and his attempt to elevate the OU program was spot on. Unfortunately TMG was a hand grenade who blew it up. Capel had Osby waiting in the wings who ended up being 1st team all Big XII even after taking a step backwards in his first season under Kruger.

We are a year behind where we would have been had Capel been allowed to finish his rebuild from the TMG mistake. Kruger will never recruit as well as Capel so our ceiling is lower. But some people would rather churn out 20 win 1 & done seasons with mediocre talent than take the risks Capel took to give us a legit chance to compete nationally.

The critics who say Capel can't coach are clowns.

Capel was a good guy that was out of his element at OU. Personally, I've chosen to remember the Capel years based on the season where we were arguably the second best team in the country with one of the best college basketball players of this generation. I think much of the vitriol the guy gets is based on his recruiting successes vs. their on court results. Wish it could have gone better, but ultimately it probably worked out for both parties. Keep in mind, he had a job offer closer to home and fans were geeked up that he might leave.

Uh, Osby took a step backwards in his first year under Kruger from what? He was better under Kruger as a junior than he was at Miss. St. as a soph. Isn't that right? Can the stat guys verify that? He was better as a senior than he was a junior. Isn't that going in the right direction?

The Capel people just don't seem to grasp this basic concept. A coach isn't a good recruiter just because he signs highly rated high school kids. He is a good recruiter if he can win in the league he plays in with the kids he recruited. After Kelvin's foundation and Blake left the program the answer is resounding evidence that Capel couldn't recruit much at all.

And on top of that it wasn't the message board posters that fired Capel. Capel got Capel fired. Capel wasn't fired because he had two losing seasons in a row and cheated. Capel was fired because he had two losing seasons in a row and cheated AND he alienated the fans, boosters, media and administration with his own arrogant behavior.

I wasn't on the line. So I can not give an exact quote. But, I do believe that I can report accurately on the conversation between Boren and Joe C. just before Capel was fired. It went something like this. Boren to Joe C. I'm tired of fielding complaints about your basketball coach. You are the athletic director and can do what ever you want. If you decide to fire Capel, I'll back you 100%. If you decide to keep him, you are on your own.

Let's wrap this up by talking about the great recruiting class Capel left for Kruger. It was that big timer Robert Goff. (whatever happened to him) And then who else? Oh, that's right. It was nobody, nothing.

Please accept my apology for any personal insults hurled your way. It's obvious this thread has deteriorated considerably since I was on the board earlier today. Jeff Capel is a sensitive topic around here, but that is no excuse for insulting someone personally who has not done one thing to deserve it, at least that I can see.

I, for one, am glad you're here! This board needs more posters like you. You have not only started new threads, you have also been a participant, and you do it in a civil manner.

I'll take the time to go back through this thread and delete any personal insult I see. Yes, it's a little too late at this point, but it's the best I can do beyond an apology.

I would ask you to accept my apology too. I've been on message boards for years and a lot of people claim to be something they aren't. Some think they were or are the 2nd coming of Adrian Peterson or Wayman Tisdale and some think their affiliation with their sons high school team (as a parent) is the same as being on the coaching staff. That's why I asked what position you held on those teams. On the internet, as you know, we are all anonymous, hence the user names so therefore we can claim to be something without worry of anyone ever knowing the truth.

As to the comment about your grammar/sentence structure you addressed why you write in that manner and that's fine. The advancements of email, text messaging and social media have relegated basic grammar use to formal documents for some people. I refuse to join that group much to the chagrin of my wife and teenage son. :)

Now that you reveal your identity a little more, I know who you are. I was raised in Grady County and went to high school in Chickasha (grade school at a country elementary school that only went from K-8) but had many cousins at Amber-Pocasset and used to watch your Carnegie teams at district, regional, and area tournaments (in which Am-Po played too). I also have some friends from Geary and was acquainted with a number of people from Carnegie thru church. I am sure you are also very aware of the Chickasha/Anadarko rivalry that was dominated by the chicks when I was in school (25-30 years ago), but Anadarko has elevated their athletic programs and now the tables have been turned.

Anyway, please keep posting as it's nice to have someone who knows the game on the board. I disagree with you 100% in your assessment of Capel but we all have our own opinions and that's what makes this board more entertaining.

One question...whatever happened to the running back from Darko who didn't qualify last year or 2 years ago?

Miami Juco in Tulsa, do you mean NEO? Was his name Sheldon Wilson?

(I don't live in OK anymore so I'm a little disconnected from the OK HS scene.)

In my opinion you should focus on Capel's five year career. He was 37-43 at OU in conference play. In the prior 25 seasons, OU had only posted two losing records in conference play. Capel posted 3 in 5 years. In the prior 12 seasons to Capel's arrival, OU had never posted a sub .500 record in conference play and only had one .500 season. That was a season when OU was devastated with injuries and the team still went .500 in conference play.

What is good about 37-43? When you consider that included two seasons with Blake Griffin, how can you possibly call the guy a good coach.

I am positive he knows more about basketball than I do. He is probably a descent guy. He was not a good college basketball during his five year tenure at OU. It really is that simple.
