I'm really looking forward to people making the same Capel arguments in 2017.
I'll never understand the Capel people. He brought in more bums than decent players. With the exception of Blake, the best of them were a bunch of over hyped underperforming cancers. That isn't good recruiting.
It doesn't matter what kind of AAU accolades some kid picks up. None of them defend and they are just every man for himself impress the scouts exhibition games. Some of those kids work out pretty well in the team game of college basketball. Some of them are just fools gold that an immature, arrogant, and inexperienced Coach like Capel bites on.
In the end, Warren, Gallon, and TMG proved out to be about the same level of talent as Cade Davis. After all, they all ended up in the same place. D league washouts and Eastern European League roster fillers is all they were ever going to amount to. And to make it worse, all of the rest of Capel's recruits weren't that good.

Not sure why it surprises anybody that his name is still brought up. We still talk about Billy and Kelvin, why wouldn't we still talk about Capel?
Capels recruits gave us a chance to be Nat'l Champnshp Contenders(Griffin, Warren, K.Clark, C.Clark, TMG, Gallon, Osby, Pledger, Crocker). I'm not going to point out what each did and who left early. But those guys gave us a shot to hang a banner. Kruger's recruits are giving us a chance to hang a NIT championship banner.

You can sit around and dream up Peter Pan gold mine scenarios all you want to. But, the Capel recruits for the most part have come and gone. They had the chance to take the program to the ditch and they did. The Kruger recruits had a chance to help lift the program out of the ditch and they did.
You mean Pledger, Fitzgerald, and Osby played no role in getting this team back to the NCAA tournament?
Both sides of this argument are ridiculous
Did I say that? Osby was the best player. Without the Kruger recruits, no tourney. Is that all cleared up now?
And it's funny how those in the "Jeff Capel, Master Recruiter" camp never mention Scotty Reynolds or Damian James, two players who could have been a big boost to the program. They were already signed, and yet Capel couldn't convince them to honor their commitments.
I've never really held that against Capel before, but honestly, if we're going to have to trudge through post after post claiming Capel was a great recruiter (the best in the country, says our resident tween), then the loss of those two players has to be included in the discussion.
Of course not, because there wouldn't have been enough players to fill the roster without Kruger's recruits since Capel left 2 years ago. LOL
Agreed. I've never understood that argument from him. A better bench the year before and we're in.
Why? As I recall, both were released from their scholarships before Capel was even hired and he didn't have an established relationships with any of the 3 recruits who left that class.
And don't misconstrue my posts in this thread that I'm a Capel apologist, because he deserves a ton of blame for what happened to the OU basketball program.
But these same discussions are beyond old
You're remembering wrong. They were released after Capel was hired; he had his chance to convince them to honor their commitments. Again, I've never really been inclined to take him to task for losing those players, but if we're expected to give him "credit" for the destructive, detrimental likes of TMG and Gallon, then he can answer, too, for losing the top recruits Sampson left him.
As for these "same discussions," believe me, I'd just as soon never see Capel's name mentioned here again -- I've certainly never started a thread about him or introduced his name to an existing thread -- but if we're to be subjected to an ongoing flood of revisionist history from certain corners, I'll continue to correct that misinformation. When they move on, so will I, and happily so.
