Umoja Gibson / Jamal Bienemy

Re: Umoja Gibson / Jamal Bieniemy

I mentioned it once or twice, but only because he was saying that was his goal. Not that I hold that against him, but it would seem he might have been jumping the gun much more than anyone on this board.

Easy to understand, Sky. Living in NYC, you’re not in a position to follow an OU recruit in north Texas. De’Vion did indeed let everyone know he wanted to play in the NBA. TY’s experience at OU is one of the reasons he gave for choosing the Sooners.

Don’t get me wrong, I think DH is going to be really good someday. He’s got the necessary work ethic, and that’s a step in the right direction.

For what it's worth (not much, IMHO), ESPN listed JB a couple spots ahead of Gibson in their transfer rankings. I mention this only to point out that some objective basketball analysts apparently don't view JB as being as inept as some here believe.

Or we traded one inept player for another.

Come on, WT. A post or two by someone who didn’t have a clue does not rise to the “all of that talk” level. There were a lot more posts to refute that claim.

I followed DeVion’s career at Denton Guyer as close or closer than anyone, and I never gave any thought to the idea he might be one and done. He’s got a lot of work to do before he’s the topic of a career in the NBA. Nothing wrong with that. As you know, there aren’t many point guards in the league who made it that far without a lot of experience and hard work, as well as a few disappointments along the way.

Someone that didn't have a clue? These were regular posters. Guys that are always here. Not trolls. Posters that have been here a long time.

A lot of people bought into the hype of his HS stats and recruiting ranking. I watched his video. I knew it would take him a couple of years to become a true offensive threat. His game would have to change. I posted that. Multiple times. But the talk of him being something great from day 1, while not coming form everybody on the board, was certainly coming from more than a couple.

harmon will average more than 13 ppg before he's done. i would take that bet.

I mentioned this before that their were a lot of posters that said Harmon was the “real deal” and would not be here all four years. I also remember people saying the only reason Ice Likele made team USA was because Harmon didn’t try out, and I like Harmons game but as far as pro potential I just don’t see him ever being in the NBA. Harmon had a decent freshmen year, I just think he got held to way too high of a standard. I also remember several posters saying that he was dominating preseason scrimmages and was “one and done” that made people like myself be way too critical of him.

Whether he goes pro or not, Harmon will be a lot better college player than likele.

This is getting really old. Do you need a hug. Surely there is someone that could help you with that.

You seem to be in more need of hugs than I. You are all hugging each other over warm body transfers, convinced they will prevent another disappointing Kruger season.
Carry on with your hugs.

By all accounts Gibson is a very good player... why do you say "Warm body transfer"? I don't think he's a Calixte/Reynolds type.

Reynolds gets bagged on but dude helped us win some games.

Gibson clearly better.

Your takes are so uninteresting.

I read this board regularly so I knew what kind of player he was. But even in the areas in which Harmon was supposed to excel, I felt he underperformed. Not that I'm writing him off -- I'm not. And if he's only marginally better next year, I won't write him off then, either.

Ironic, though, that you rush to defend Harmon after writing off Bieniemy, given a very strong case can be made that Harmon was not as good as JB whether you compare their respective performances last season or their freshman campaigns. Is it possible you didn't know what type of player Jamal was?

Last season, Bieniemy outrebounded Harmon, 120-54, he had 28 more assists, he had better assist-to-turnover ratio -- better than 2-1 compared to Harmon's, which was just under 1.5-1 . He had 5 blocks to Harmon's 2. They both had 34 steals. They shot about the same overall (though Harmon shot the three better and was 2% better overall). That said, Harmon averaged just two more points per game in what I predict will be the worst offensive season of JB's career.

Compare their freshman seasons instead, and Bieniemy comes off just as well. JB outshot Harmon his freshman season -- both overall and from deep -- though he shot less often than did De'Vion. He had 28 more rebounds than Harmon, twice as many assists (119-59), an assist-to-turnover ratio of better than 2.5-1 compared to Harmon's aforementioned 1.5-1, 47 steals to Harmon's 34, 6 blocks to Harmon's 2.

So why anyone would rush to give Harmon a break they're not willing to give JB, I cannot grasp. I very much hope that Harmon has a spectacular sophomore season, but if he doesn't, will the same posters be writing him off too? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

IMO, there is a big difference in having 1 year of data and 2 years of data. If this time next year, Harmon has the same kind of year and similar stats to JB, then I think most will be honest about it.

People were very optomistic about JB after his first year. But he didn't pan out.

for the life of me I dont understand what wall JB hit this season. that seemed deeper than just sophomore slump. he was just all over the place inconsistent and often bad. and I wasn't even sure about consistency of effort. he didnt play like a top 5 conference D1 starter.

Same wall Hill/Harmon/Vic will hit next year. And everyone will blame their work ethic or their lack of talent rather than their coaches.
