Wear twins will not return to North Carolina

The Wear twins, David and Travis, are planning to transfer away from North Carolina – doing double the damage to the Tar Heels' frontcourt depth for the 2010-11 season.

Long Beach Press-Telegram basketball writer Frank Burlison reported on his blog that their father, Dave Wear, informed UNC coach Roy Williams his sons wish to be released in order to transfer elsewhere. When they were recruited out of Mater Dei in Santa Ana, Calif., the Wears had considered UCLA and Arizona before choosing the Tar Heels.

Losing the Wears leaves North Carolina with only 7-0 Tyler Zeller and 6-10 John Henson to play the power positions. This past year's team had six players who were 6-9 or taller, but Deon Thompson completed his eligibility and Ed Davis entered the NBA draft. The Heels' three recruits to date – 6-6 Harrison Barnes, 6-6 Reggie Bullock and 6-3 Kendall Marshall – are perimeter players.

The Wear brothers each averaged more than 10 minutes per game as freshmen. Travis, who is 6-10, 235, contributed 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. David, who is 6-10 225, was good for 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds.

David proved to be a promising long-distance shooter for a player his size, making 8-of-16 3-pointers on the season. He started two games. In his best performance, he scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting in a loss to Virginia Tech. He missed the final 10 games of the season with a hip injury.

Travis started once, in a loss to Wake Forest, producing a season-best 13 points and six rebounds in 25 minutes.

I am sure UNC will just replace them with someone better

Hale mentioned this? We must be in the running for them otherwise I doubt he'd know who they were. Early word has them possibly ending up at UCLA though.

he was asked about them in the interview... hale just mentioned that we would have 2 ships available after next season, so it would be worth looking in to... i would guess ucla as well... they are california boys and ucla was in there final 3 when they chose unc...

If they leave, it reads like UCLA will be where they go. The only negative to UCLA would be the number of scholarships they have for next year. But I still think it would be a good get for UCLA.

"Losing the Wears leaves North Carolina with only 7-0 Tyler Zeller and 6-10 John Henson to play the power positions."

So sorry, UNC will only have two potential all-ACC players instead of 4.

Haha I read that and thought , Oh so sad. We couldn't even get our only player taller than 6'9 on the court last season.

You would need the two scholarships for this season. Unless they're looking to pay their own way for one year, that is.

New NCAA rule. Twins only count as one scholarship.

Saw this coming they were so overrated. Their inclusion in the mcds all American game was a joke

How did you come to that conclusion? Roy Williams is upset about them leaving. This is not them being forced out. This sounds more to me like they miss home if the are leaving for UCLA.

yeah, because kids have never paid there own way for one year while waiting out a redshirt/transfer...

RW is upset because UNC has zero depth inside now. Zeller can't stay healthy, and Henson is good but needs to put on serious weight or he will continue to get out-muscled down low. Past those 2, Barnes might be their best back-up post now. However, I agree with hoopsaustin (even though I think he is a closet Tar Heel and I wear a different shade of blue). He probably "saw this coming" because this rumor has been floating around for a week or so now. The Wear's were very overrated coming out of HS and shouldn't have been in the McD's game. I think one reason they were so lauded was because they were a 2-for-1 deal and pretty solid players. That said, no one in Chapel Hill (fans, IDK about coaches) expected big things from them in the future; they were expected to be solid, 4 year contributors (mostly off the bench). That is not what is expected out of legit Burger Boys. They can probably go somewhere else and be pretty good players, but they were going to come off the bench their entire careers if they stayed in baby blue.

This move definately hurts UNC next season, but I expect RW is happy that those ships are opened up and will recruit better players than the Wear brothers. So while I think this is bad for the 10-11 Tar Heel's (maybe better than last year, but not likely now), this will likely improve the 11-12 and 12-13 teams.
