I think ESPN3 is only online.

It is, but you have to login with your cable/internet provider. DirecTV doesn't give you that access and neither does Time Warner if you only have internet with them.

Seems DirecTV now has an agreement for ESPN3. This must be relatively new, because it's never let me login successfully before.

Looks like it happened in Feb 2015. And I'm just finding out now.

Yes, my DirecTV (television only) account is how I log in and watch live sports on ESPN3. If you're a DirecTV subscriber, you do have access to ESPN3. The agreement is in about its second year, I believe.
