I remember how excited most of us were when Capel signed four burger boys in his first three seasons. We thought we were on top of the world back then. That was before Blake left for the NBA, and the three McDonald's All-Americans on our roster the following year led the team to a pathetic 13-18 record. Please don't tell me some of you have forgotten what a mess we had on our hands that year, on and off the court?
Moral of the story: Signing high-profile players doesn't mean a thing when they're at OU for all of the wrong reasons and the team chemistry is bad.
Sure, it works out sometimes and you have a great year, maybe two. But I'll take Kruger's method of building a program by signing good players who are also good people, any ol' day. I'm very happy with our 2012 recruiting class!
It works out more often than not. Tiny/TMG were burger boys because of their skill on the court, not their make-up as an individual, something Capel completely over looked in his recruitment process or just chose to ignore. I have watched Julius Randle play multiple times and to compare him to the other two would be very inaccurate. Not saying we should only target middle echelon recruits, but to not go after selective players in the hopes of winning a NC (which is the goal of every college team) would be unwise. Do I expect that level of play right now? Obviously not. I assume (and hope) LK will continue to target quality players to get us to the dance, but once we achieve that level I expect him to go after tougher recruits to reach the next level.
Reason these players are listing OSU is because of the facilities...plain and simple. As a high school junior/senior, that red carpet looks pretty sweet compared to what OU is offering. LK will be able to land some bigger recruits, but not until we improve our record and notoriety in the Big XII. OU has offered virtually nothing of interest the past few years to draw serious major interest.
