Austin Grandstaff to DePaul, not OU

So much for wanting to get closer to his son when he left Ohio State......

Someone must've sold him a bill of goods, or he's radioactive to Texas teams. In no way does DePaul help him do anything he claimed he wanted to do, other than getting minutes and taking L's.

You think he'll stick around there long enough to actually see the court?

He didn't leave OU to be close to his son. He didn't have a spot on the roster next year.

The odyssey continues...feel bad for him to an extent. Lacking some serious guidance right now.

Does he have to sit another year? Can he play in December like he could at ou? I imagine we blocked him from going to a Texas school

Can he officially be labeled a Cancer, like so many other kids have been on this board...

Transfers are commonplace in NCAA basketball. It did not work out for him at tOSU or at OU. Hopefully, things will work out for him at DePaul. Wish the best for the young man.

He wasnt a cancer within the locker room. He just didnt live up to the expectations set before him to be allowed to stay.

Well liked though.

I believe you. He know he had some "issues" while at OU and Kruger got fed up with it. I was saying he left Ohio State to be closer to his son, so I figured he might leave OU for a Texas school.

Austin Grandstaff picks Oklahoma Sooners and gets to be closer to his new son

Seven months ago, Austin Grandstaff's life had to change. He had no choice. He had to grow up. He had eyes watching him now.

It had little to do with the fact that he was getting ready to move more than 1,000 miles from home to play college basketball in the Big Ten Conference. It had almost everything to do with what he left behind in the suburb of Dallas. Before Grandstaff left for Ohio State, his son, Knox, was born – a stirring moment for a young father still less than 20 years old. Grandstaff came home as often as he could during his first semester with the Buckeyes, sometimes stopping in for just a day so he could be with Knox, who lives with his mother and maternal grandparents. It wasn’t enough.

In December, Grandstaff announced that he would be leaving Ohio State, citing basketball reasons to some. This time, he cited more personal reasons. He talked about Knox.

“It’s matured me a lot,” Grandstaff said of his son’s birth. “It’s made me look at everything that I’m doing and know that there are eyes on me. There’s a responsibility to be even more of a leader and do things the right way.”
“After I left Ohio State, being close to him was the biggest priority but also finding a place where I could be utilized the right way and just get better,” Grandstaff said.

Grandstaff averaged 4.4 points and shot 33.3 percent from behind the arc, played 11.5 minutes per game in 10 appearances this season at Ohio State and said things were starting to come together for him on the basketball court despite being stuck behind more veteran players on the roster. He just didn’t want to miss two years of his son’s life and not be playing significant minutes. He didn’t want to miss some of the most important moments.

“He struggled with it quite a bit,” said Wes Grandstaff, Austin’s father. “He wanted to try to get home as much as possible when it was available. There was a time when he came home for just 24 hours. He wanted to try to be here as much as he could. It kind of made it difficult being so far away and not being able to juggle it.”

He’ll be closer to Knox. Basketball is always and has always been a priority for Austin Grandstaff, but now it’s not the only one.
“To try to be in his life as much as I can right now: I think that really is the biggest thing,” he said.

I respect Coach Kruger for his "my way, or the highway" stance. It probably helps with the team staying so close-knit. I'm sure he clearly communicates his expectations and gives players plenty of warning, but Frank Booker, AK, and now Grandstaff haven't lived up to expectations necessary to remain a part of the team over the past 2 years. LK sure isn't afraid to pull the trigger.

I know skipping classes is one sure-fire way to get in the dog house......

I think that the new Frosh signee, J Shepard, will be a bigger contributor than Grandstaff would have been.

No chance.

Why do OU fans do this? Grandstaff is a darn good player. What, the 2nd or 3rd highest rated one that Kruger has recruited in his time at OU? The kid can play.

No chance? That's a silly pronouncement. Why do OU fans do this? You have no idea how good Strong will be. If Buddy were a newly signed freshman, you'd very likely say he had "no chance" of being better than Grandstaff, too, since he didn't have as many stars by his name as a recruit.

Grandstaff won't be much of a player at all if he doesn't figure out a) how to be content in one place for more than a few months and b) to abide by the academic/behaviorial standards his coach sets for him.

But in any case, what say we give Strong a few weeks, minimum, in a Sooner uniform before we proclaim how good he's going to be?

So quick to "attack" me, you didn't even read the post.

I'll help you out.....we aren't talking about Strong here.

Grandstaff's D skills are average at best. J Shepard has potentially excellent D skills and very good passing skills. These skills are lacking on the OU roster.

I knew who we were talking about, my fingers betrayed me.

My point stands and your response, well, doesn't (except for correctly pointing out my typing error). You have no idea how good Shepard will be, but because Grandstaff, who can't even manage to stick with a team long enough for anyone to know how good he really is, had more stars when he was a recruit, you pronounce him better than a Sooner signee who hasn't yet played a minute for us.

Again, you'd no doubt say the same about Hield (and I'll throw in Cousins, too) if they were incoming freshmen this year. And you'd be wrong about both.

Nice job on spotting my getting Shepard's name wrong, though. That was spot on.

Grandstaff did pretty decent his freshman year at Ohio State. Averaged more points than any frosh we had on our team this year.

Did Hield come in and outperform Pledger his freshman year? NO!

If you want to compare this kid to Cousins, you might go back and see what Cousins did as freshmen.

Grandstaff would have been huge for this team. He's gone though and now we are down a SG and up a PG. And this PG is most likely not going to play much if Woodard plays PG this year which most likely will be the case.
