Capel: "I just didn't get enough time"

I hope this doesn't turn into another bash Capel thread, I thought his comments were fair and what I would expect from anyone in that circumstance.

Fair enough, but that doesn't mean we have to agree with him, just b/c it's what we would expect him to say.

He was counting on a big 2013 class. Period. That was his "rescue/recovery" plan. That isn't building a "program" in my mind.

Capel mentioned his assistant coaches in the article.....anybody know where they've ended up?

I thought they were fair as well. With that said, he's the head honcho and failed to maintain the standards associated with the OU program from a personnel, competitive and ethical standpoint. Buck stops with him and he knows that is part of the business. He'll be a better coach from this situation in the long-run.

I agree, and I'd also say that I am happy with the direction of the program under Coach Kruger.

What did he not get enough time to do?

Completely put the OU basketball program in the grave?
Continue to recruit and sign D-2 prospects (or should I say give them a chance)?
Put the entire OU athletic department under probation?

Just what did he not have enough time to do? Curious minds want to know.

I like Capel and still think highly of him as a coach. I said it after the 2009-10 season that this was the type of season and team that a coach might not ever recover from. I would of been fine giving Capel one more year, but too many factors were hurting the program overall (looming NCAA investigation, lack of interest/attendance, lack of quality players coming in) But i wish Capel the best of luck and hope he gets a head coaching job again soon.

“The first thing for me was making sure my family was OK."

I bet they were ecstatic, he got paid over a mil to be at home and spend time with them.

I'm not going to disagree with anything you are saying, but what do you expect him to say? If anyone on here is expecting Jeff Capel to come out and say I did a terrible job, I'm a horrible coach and I have issues with the NCAA that may be looming then I think you are never going to be happy.

I don't remember which coach but one was hired as the head coach for one of the small universities in OKC.

Sorry, Klegg beat me to it. Thanks Klegg I could not remember which one.

We can always count on Big Old Booger for objective intelligence when posting about Capel.

I like Jeff and I hope he gets a good job and has a lot of success. That said, I think Joe C did the right thing in making a change at the time he did.
