Capel not happy >>> Norman Transcript

Nope just see a ton of potential and someone we can build a good team around during his years at OU. Give the 19 year old a break, not many freshman in the NCAA have to play 40 min a game at the point...

Certainly not many get to play that much when they only play on one end of the floor. Most coaches would have pulled him and sat him on the bench that's for sure.

And replace him with ????

Franklin or find somebody who wants to play for the University of Oklahoma and not for themselves.

We were losing anyway at some point he has to teach these kids if they don't want to play at both ends, they won't play.

This isn't the NBA, you don't make mid-season trades.

You yourself said a while back "you play to win the game", TMG for all his defensive lapses still gives us the best chance to win.

Correct, they do play to win the game. I think I used that phrase in a different context, but at the same time if the player isn't giving 100% effort, then pull him. The point has to be made.

but if you play to win and he gives you the best chance of winning, why pull him?

:ez-laugh:

That quote was used in response to a poster who stated "at this point in the season you only start to look for improvement". I then replied with the quote of "you play to win the game", meaning you don't just look for improvement.

Winning a game with a lazy player who refuses to play on both ends isn't going to ultimately help the program win. They may have beaten Iowa State because TMG had a great offensive night, but think of all the games they lost because he (and Tiny and Pledger, etc.) didn't play defense.

And, it's never about "seeing improvement". It's about winning. If sitting a player for 10 minutes, a half or the entire game helps that player see he won't play if he doesn't give effort, then the point is made and the team is better for it. If he can't see that point, then cut him loose and find somebody who will.

Before we get into the whole "TMG had the weight of the entire team on his shoulders" thing...Let's not forget one thing. In Decemeber, TMG did not report back from Christmas break 3 minutes late or 3 hours late...He showed up 3 days late. 3 days after the date Capel set for the players to return.

What was his punishment? The first half of the Gonzaga game if I remember correctly. Whew! I bet he didn't consider doing that again.

Funny you mention that, because from that point on he became the best player on the team....per Capel.

TMG is the best player in the country when his team is down 20+ points.

I rarely agree with some of the stuff you say, but this is kinda true. He's the best offensive player when his teams down 20.

There is no doubt TMG plays absolutely no defense, but no one else on the team does either. As far as only scoring when the other team is up that may be true. Last night TMG was trying to distribute the ball to start the game. It was obvious the plan was to pound the ball into the interior. The only thing that ignited the Sooners was TMG but the chips had already fallen.

It seems to me that I remember a number of the same type of posts on OSU boards towards the end of Sean's tenure. Boggan is a thug, Eaton has no clue. They will not listen to the coaches etc.... Well look how that turned out. It wasn't their fault afterall. I am not saying It is Capel's fault because I have no personel insight what so ever, but when multiple players have issue's there may be an underlying current.

Believe it or not I prefer the Boomers to be good as I do OSU because frankly it is no fun spanking a defenseless foe. The old Eddie vs Sampson wars are truly missed in my house.

TMG, is just a freshman guys who played well this season for what he had to play with it, most of these kids are recruited on their offensive game because in highschool as long as they were scoring the coach was ok with that and guy's like TMG,was never taught to play defense on any level and that is the coach fault.Capel recruited that kid knowing he was not a defensive player so he should have not recruited him are he should have worked with him one on one with his defense before the season started and he did not so thats Capel fault.

Agree 100%

Pledger and Fitz are poor defenders for physical and youth reasons. Tommy Mason Griffin just doesnt care. When Cade Davis is flying at Keiton Page from 15 ft away after guarding his man, and TMG is 5 ft way just looking and turns around to get the ball out of the net with no expression, that's a disregard for the team. Tiny has shown more effort as of late, but he was the same way in the beginning as was Willie Warren.

This thread is crazy. I think people dog TMG because he could be great, but would rather only use his ability on offense. Same thing with Willie. Tiny has gotten better, but I would have yanked him when he just fell to the floor and let the ball roll away after a knee bump. Name one other OU big man that you've ever seen do that. This team was awful and no one person deserves the blame. Its a team that needed some humility from the head coach to the players. We'll find out what kind of character these guys have soon enough.
