I have been a Capel supporter since day one. Everyone who knows me knows that I have sung his praises nonstop since he got here to anyone I meet that has any interest in OU basketball. Nearly every move he made the first 3 years I thought was a good one. I liked the way he coached, recruited and carried himself during that entire period.

But right now I am very dissapointed that he is not more visable. I can't imagine Bob Stoops, Roy Williams, Rick Barnes or whoever that is the leader or representative of a major program like OU just dissapearing when a season ends and not showing his face during a time when the program seems to be crumbling to pieces.

I know I am not the first person to ask this.

I don't think going 13-18, then avoiding the media during the offseason, then following that up with another poor season (which is very likely at this point) is acceptable for the head coach at the University of Oklahoma. There are a lot of us out there that have put much time, effort and money into OU and I think it's only fair that our head coach be the one to tell us when players leave, what the plan is for next year and major events of OU basketball. We shouldn't be hearing these things through Twitter or Facebook. It should come from our coach.

Come on coach. We are there through the good times and the bad. We expect the same from you.

Sincerely,
Capelfan

I want to know why Joe C thinks its a good idea for Jeff to not do any interviews about his current roster or the future of the team. I understand he can't comment on the investigation but he could comment on the current players and what he thinks about next season.

Anyone else feeel like not renewing their season tickets? I have had tickets for over 16 years and I am almost at the point of not renewing them next year. Joe C needs to allow Jeff to do interviews if he isn't or else Jeff needs to take responsibility for the current state of the program and answer questions about it.

They know that the fans and media are freaking out. Why aren't they saying anything?

It's bad business.

There are valid times to stay quiet like this.

  • If the "status" they could convey would just make things worse. Confusion from the U would be gas on the fire.
  • If they are under a gag order.
  • If things actually are worse.
  • If Joe C has asked him to.
  • If they believe they can deprive the story of oxygen and control the story after that happens...
  • ... etc.

Very bad business.

I'm hardly a connect the dots, speculation type person, but Jeff either has a major recruiting ace up his sleeve, or someone higher up has told him to not talk to anybody about anything.

What is even more troubling is that the only information we are getting about anyone in the program is from Tiny, who is going to Krip Killin or something at an NBA draft party in a week or two...wouldn't shock me if that only leads to more trouble.

Oh well.

I absolutely agree he needs to say something...I am just hoping that he is so busy that he forgets other aspects of his job...I mean he should be out getting 4 more signees and looking for someone to fill the assist opening

Murdoch said on the SA this morning that they have confirmed there is some kind of gag order on Capel, but he really didn't elaborate. Take it for what its worth...

Oh, if thats the case I def was not expecting it...this is terrible news if it is true

Silence makes you look guilty in my opinion. If nothing else do a radio/tv intereview answer some questions and get word out brighter times are ahead of this program and we are looking for some players.

Oh well.

If as an AD you feel like you need to put a "gag order" on your coach, then you are making a mistake keeping him around. JMHO, but during this time of year, and espescially after a season like the last one, you need your coach to be as vocal as possible about the state of the program and the improvements he intends to make going into next year.

TOTALLY agree. Either he's your coach or he's not. Let him do his job or fire him.

I seriously doubt capel has a full gag order...prob just not able to talk about the galon situation...but he could still talk about recruits or who he may be targeting...what the plans are for next year...ect...or even come out and say that he has no comment about the gallon situation! If he said that then we would know he is not allowed to talk about it

That is what I'm saying as well. I'm a big Capel fan and think that he can turn things around, but not if he has a "gag order" that is detrimental to the program [which IMHO is bigger than Capel or any other coach]. Hopefully Murdoch is just talking out of his butt [he is prone to doing that at times].

Who is Capel? JK of course...

Being on this board has me more worried about the program than i probably should be...

I didnt get on message boards when Capel was hired and Sampson left, so i dont know if there was this much or more panic but it seems hard to believe it could have been much worse...

I am just ready for the class to be wrapped up and we can move on to talking about next season...still too many unknowns...

He can't talk about recruits or who he may be targeting. What he can talk about is the direction he wants to take the program next year and explain that he is working day and night to get there. For an AD or administration not to give him that opportunity is pretty jacked up IMHO, and if true, I've lost some respect for those folks. Either let him get out and sell his program, or send him on his way...but to expect him to do these things with one hand tied behind his back is silly.

That period of time between Kelvin leaving and the first game of the next season was pretty depressing on the boards. Funny, but there are quite a few parallels: (a) issues with NCAA, (b) issues with losing recruits, (c) silence from the program as to what was happening, and (d) rampant speculation about the program in general.
