between defections, losses, development problems it seems like we are always in search of 2 more.

Why does no one wanna lead this team?
 
Every good team needs at least a couple capable ball handlers. Taking 1-2 point guards every year is probably not a bad strategy for any coach. Most good point guards are capable of playing off the ball, so it's not like they're going to be sitting on the bench wasting away if they aren't the best 1 on the roster.

You can get away with playing 2 (sometimes even 3) point guards at any given time without losing too much due to size. As long as you aren't recruiting a bunch of pass first, shoot never point guards, there's not a whole lot of downside. Too many quality ball handlers is a problem most coaches would love to have.
