Get TCU and Houston and save the Big 12....

Problem is, it looks like the Big XII sat on its laurels. May be too late to do anything. I prefer the Big XII to any of the other conferences. I hate the thought of being associated with the left coast, but alas, now what? Curious as to why those managing the conference haven't done much to improve the situation.

I would guess that we have been the 2nd best conference in football and 3rd best in basketball over the last 10 years. It really boils down to # of televisions? Or is it the number of stations that can offer high dollar contracts?

I've heard so many versions of "reasons why" that my head hurts. And it still isn't making complete sense. i.e., if it is truly about football, are we saying that the ACC has more football fans than the Big XII? Or are there only three major networks that will pony up the huge contracts?

No thanks on getting TCU and Houston and saving the Big 12. Talk about downgrading....

"We have a very, very strong sense from our television partners that the revenue stream would be very, very good going forward," Castiglione told The Oklahoman. "Better than where we are today."

Castiglione said he continued to work toward a solution to save the Big 12, which he said can still thrive -- in competition and on the balance sheet.

"I understand people are writing this like the ship has sailed and there really isn't any way the Big 12 could stay together," Castiglione told the Oklahoma City newspaper Thursday. "I just don't think this is true. I think there's still a way for us to stick together and be viable. Whether we do or not, I don't know."

1.) Towing the company line...can't wait until four months from now when all these e-mails between presidents, commissioners, ADs and coaches hit the mainstream media. There have been backdoor deals going on for over a month.

2.) That assumes that UT is going to buy into the Big XII as a television package, which they have already indicated they would seriously consider their own network.

3.) Adding TCU and Houston does not increase the marketability of the Big XII...it's simple economics and demographics.

Adding another potential powerhouse (TCU) in football and potential sleeping giant (Houston) to the conference doesn't add anything? I bet within 5 years of being in the conference Houston is pretty darn good in football and basketball.

TCU and Houston could recruit in a way that Colorado and Nebraska never could anymore...

TCU and Houston were abandoned by Tech, A&M, Texas, and Baylor in 1996 because they weren't valuable enough to save the SWC.

If you look at it from a competitive standpoint, could it work? As you said potentially. But, if you take the stance that the networks do (from a business perspective) the notion holds very little water in their eyes.

Add TCU and Memphis for Nebraska and Colorado and that's an upgrade.
Negotiate better TV deals, which is reportedly happening now, and it's a better option than the Pac-16.
