good update on Sooner Willie Warren

BG was coming to OU regardless of whether KS, Capel, or I were coaching!

Willie Warren came back for a year when he would have been a first rounder and likely a lottery pick.

The alleged incident with AJ was not cool at all, but blaming him for the issues with the program are silly. He was a frustrated 19 year old who was literally watching millions of dollars slip away due to injury and poor play. That woudln't be an easy situation for anyone to be in, let alone a kid.

From what I gathered about that disastrous year were:

TMG was just a horrible person and a huge locker room cancer.

Willie Warren was difficult, but not a bad kid per se.

Tiny Gallon was just kind of lazy, but also not a bad kid. Obviously the NCAA issues hurt us, but I don't blame him at all. That's 100% on the coach for breaking a rule, adn the NCAA for making such a BS rule.

Anyway, I'm glad to see WW is doing well.

We all heard about one ….. but I don't recall hearing about two. I hope not.

Agreed. The only one I knew about was AJ. Maybe WT meant he did it twice, not that there were two different teammates. That may not be the case, but that's the way I interpreted it.

Speaking of AJ, he was one of the most underrated PG's we've had at OU in modern times. He had one semi-rough year, but was very solid throughout his career. I see he is back in Amarillo running a youth basketball academy. I know his dad was a coach, so it must be in his genes as well. I also like that he has his OU jersey all over the home page.

Good luck to him.

AJ's Academy of Hoops

Austin was not only an outstanding player, he's a fine young man from a great family.

I still communicate with a close member of his family on occasion, so I knew he was back in Amarillo running a basketball academy for kids. He was so fundamentally strong as a player, you can bet the youngsters who attend his camp will learn to play the game the right way. If I had a son or grandson in that age group and lived close enough, I would jump at the chance to have AJ teach him how the game is supposed to be played.

AJ was always a favorite of mine. He came in for lots of grief back in the day, though I think virtually everyone has since come around regarding him. Gilbert's another player that fans complained about for a long time, but he too eventually won them over. (I think Gilbert won most fans over during his senior season; for AJ, it seems some came to appreciate him only after he was gone.)

I liked both. I was most proud of Gilbert's improvement at the charity stripe. He went from atrocious to a very good FT shooter. That takes a lot of work.

He was always a very physical player, good rebounder and good defender and he always hustled.

The story I heard is that he did it to AJ twice.
