Gotleib on Cezar Guererro

Gottlieb has better connections through out the basketball world than any us on this board combined but I really doubt if he has seen Cezar play live. I really don't recall Gottlieb getting around and watching a ton of AAU and High School ball as that isn't his job, he's a college bball guy first. I'll take Capel and company's opinion on Cezar over Gottlieb's in this case.

guerrero has had the rep as a scorer, and as a non-team guy all through his hs/aau career. that plus his size has been the knock on him forever. but this last summer, all the nat'l scouts shifted on him and seemed to think that he was starting to play to win.

so, basically, i agree with sam. i can see why gottlieb would think that, and i'd certainly be leery of him. but when push comes to shove, i'd take the word of the guys that are seeing now.

Don't know a thing about Guererro but I do know about OSU. PG play was only one of many weaknesses. One of those being the lack of a consistent scorer. Sounds to me like he could fit in one way or the other.

Yesterday he said it was down to OU, OSU and Iowa.

In his analysis...

I'd personally rather have a guy that is an excellent scorer, second nature for him...than a guy that is scoring challenged, that is an excellent distributer...

I like PG's that can take over games if needed because they have the ball in their hands all the time and in crunch you know they will have the ball...

If you have a good coach, they can teach them how to be a better PG and buy into the team concept...that is what will be debated about Capel...

Obviously this is just my offensive thoughts, hopefully this guy can play some D...or at least has shown in high school he has a decent concept of defense...i dont think very many high school players actually play defense...as long as he isnt like Tiny (still cant believe he didnt know what hedging off a screen was)...

I'm parking my car, right here with ya.....

The only time it's good to have a score-first point guard, is if you don't have any other scorers at the guard positions. And if that is the case, you probably aren't going to be very good anyways. Sure, we could use a scoring pg right now, because our SG/SF's aren't always consistent and effecient at scoring the rock.

I guess we would have turned away Scottie Reynolds, John Wall, or the OU women would have turned away Stacey Dales and Danielle Robinson. There is nothing wrong with a point guard who can score, that is just Aggie hype coming from Gottlieb in case they don't reel him in.

By the way, all high school point guards that are D-1 capable score first because they are the best players on their team.

please, dont make me think about OU without Stacy.

This must mean that OSU does not have such a good chance of getting Cezar. cynical maybe but this sounds a bit like getting the word through the grapevine then concocting a sour grapes story....

You do realize that this team is just as young if not younger than last years and two of the current players on this team got caught shoplifting right?

They won't be next year...which was what I was talking about. And those shoplifters might have matured from their freshmen years to there junior years.

I like Gottlieb's analysis on all things basketball except when it involves OU. Gottlieb knows OU is going after Guerrero so I believe his opinion is slanted.

He may also be hedging his bets in the event Guerrero chooses OU.

So, I'd take what he says with a grain of salt.

As for Guerrero, I don't really care if he scores, in fact I think that is good, just as long as he distributes to get everyone involved, plays defense and doesn't turn the ball over every other time down the floor.

I also hope if Cezar attempts to skip practice, or return from the holidays 2 days later than the rest of the team that he is sitting squarely on the bench right next to Thompson and Hardrick, if they are still here. Hopefully, Capel has learned his lesson on not disciplining his players.

I agree. Capel can break him of bad habits if Capel is willing to do it. You play the kid and when he shoots early in the shot clock (when they are bad shots) put him on the bench. As you do this, make him watch film of great pgs and convince him his shot at the next level is to be a great pg that passes and sets up other players and penalizes the other team when left open.

I don't think we are at a point where we can pick and choose between higher-tier players because an analyst said they might have certain selfish characteristics in AAU. Just sayin'

Then don't gripe if he turns out to be TMG 2.0.

Just because a PG has a scorers mentality, does not mean that he can't be a great floor general. In fact, in todays modern game, scoring PG's are far more common than traditional PG's.

Same thing their homers do when it comes to football recruits who get down to us vs os-who

With Blair and Newell on the roster, Capel clearly has the option of sitting Guerrero for a half or longer if necessary to get him to see the light of team play. With last year's team, that really wasn't an option while Willie was hurt.
