Gotleib on Cezar Guererro

Most HS players go to college with a need to check their ego. The key is coaching those kids and learning how to be a teacher, motivator, disciplinarian when needed, etc... Some here would like to believe that JC is the 1st coach to recruit some head cases.

KS and Tubbs had their fair share of head cases, and for the most part they were able to break most of them. JC has had one recruiting class full of headcases, so the jury should still be out on his ability to work with players.

You don't sit a player just because he takes a bad shot. You teach a player, and as they mature you hope that they learn to stay within the team concept. Sitting a player every time he makes a mistake will kill a guys confidence. There are times that you sit a guy, but some here seem to think that each mistake warrants benching..... Unrealistic in todays game. I have watched plenty of Duke, Ohio St, KU, games this yr, and I have seen some bad shots. Selby at KU is learning when to shoot, and when not to. Imagine his progression if Self had benched him early in the season every time he took a bad shot.....

What about all the other transfers under Capel, that did not come from that class? Not sure if headcase is the right word to use with them, but we've had FAR too many people leave (from day 1 through this season) for that not to be a read flag.

And we may not be done this year. I figure we'll lose at least one, if not two more players.

Just because a PG has a scorers mentality, does not mean that he can't be a great floor general. In fact, in todays modern game, scoring PG's are far more common than traditional PG's.

This.

I can think of a couple of point guards with scorers' mentalities who were tremendous floor generals at both OSU and OU:

Doug is probably getting every bit of Guererro info from his brother and dad, who are both pretty prominent on the west coast. His dad runs some kind of Southern California basketball camp, and his brother is an assistant coach at Cal.

I'm sure one or both of them have seen him play, and relayed that info to Doug.

There is no doubt this is a correct statement. It's just a lot easier to grill Doug about being a homer on here.

Doug's dad said on the radio last week that OSU was his leader after the entire staff flew out to Cali on one of Boone's jets and watched CG play.

Then don't gripe if he turns out to be TMG 2.0.

TMG's problem was maturity and attitude not a lack of skills. Honestly, I wish OU could have figured out how to change his attitude and still had him on the team. He was a very good basketball player that simply needed to grow up.

I have zero problem if Capel showed him the door because his attitude was horrible but if OU runs from every egotistical high school senior basketball player simply because TMG did not work out, OU might not have a basketball team and certainly won't have a good one.

He sounds a little like a Denis Clemente clone. I would take that in a heartbeat.

I agree with this, however I'll also add Capel has to discipline his players and not allow them to call the shots as he did with WW, TMG, and Tiny. If he continues to take on egotistical players and allows them to run the show, as he did last year then we would probably be better off without a basketball program because of how bad we would be.

I will add I believe Jeff learned from last year and I think if he were to be in a similar situation, he would probably change a few things for the better.

I agree with all of this 100%. Any program that recruits the best players runs the risk of some egos. I think Jeff will use the lessons learned from last year as a positive the next time he gets in that situation.

Except Hollis wasn't our PG. Quannas White was.

Lucas should have never been a PG. He played one but wasn't a true PG. His size was his undoing because his skills translated to being a SG. That's the reason he's somewhere overseas still not playing his role.

Did Doug talk about his brother being sanctioned by the NCAA with the rest of the Cal program? Or did that not get brought up?

But he was the point guard.

Bobik played more of the "point guard" position some of the time, allowing Lucas to play off the ball some. But, Lucas has played 500 minutes in the NBA. Which is pretty good for a sub 6 foot guard. And 500 more than Hollis Price did. :eddie187_jpg_xs:

At times yes, but crunch time point guard was Lucas.

I understand that. That's not what I meant. Just because you start at PG, it doesn't make a good point guard. The poke brought up Price and Price wasn't a PG. To me, Lucas was never a TRUE PG either.

NBA execs are looking for PGs that have a pass-first mentality but can still score. Basically a PG that can do both effectively and still be the floor general. You don't see many PGs averaging less than 4 assists these days. For example, DRose, DWilliams, Westbrook...All those guys can score but they are also just as good dishing the rock. You aren't going to make it in the NBA (as a PG) averaging 18 ppg and 3-4 apg. That was Lucas' game.
