Geno Auriemma was hired as the head coach of women's basketball at the University of Connecticut in the summer of 1985. He had served 4 years as an assistant coach under Debbie Ryan at the University of Virginia. Auriemma was inheriting a Husky program that had just one winning season in its 11-year history.
His first season the Huskies went 12-15
his record after 3yrs was 43-39
didn't make tourney until his 4th yr
didn't make a final four until year 6
didn't win a championship until year 10
I think its safe to say he built the program, and the reason he gets the talent is because of the success he created.
On the amazing side he was won at least 30 games every year since 93-94 except 98-99 (29-5) & 04-05 (25-8 coming off 3 straight NCAA championship seasons).
