I don't understand why true OU fans want to give Capel another year.
Those that want to give Capel another year help me understand, answer this question.

Why do you accept complete failure from OU's basketball coach 3 out of 5 years but 99.9% of OU fans would never accept this from a OU football coach?

I can argue John Blake had a better and more respected football program than this current Capel program. Its okay to fire Blake after 2 bad seasons but not Capel? Is basketball just something to do before spring football practices?

Blake had three seasons, actually, and all of them with sub-.500 records. He had no season that was the equivalent of Capel's 2008 campaign, much less the 2009 Elite Eight season.

So I can't imagine how you'd argue that Blake "had a better and more respected football program than this current Capel program."

I'm guessing you'd point the amount of talent that was on hand when Stoops took over, but it's much easier to recruit for Sooner football than Sooner hoops.

First of all, Blake wasn't fired after 2 bad seasons. He was fired after 3 bad seasons.

Second of all, with regard to the subject of this thread: Horse Hockey! Just because people don't rant and rave on this message board that Capel should be fired doesn't mean they don't have 'OU BB pride'.

Well Capel should be fired before he has a 3rd bad season.

When TV Announcers point out that we are trying to play a Zone Defense with our hands down its time to do something.

Sunvold was like, "there is just no energy from the fans or the Missouri team (as they are up by 17 or so), its as if nobody in this building thinks OU is good enough to make a run".

Pretty embarrassing.

I would love to read you try and argue that because it would be a bigger fail than these last two basketball seasons

There's been a lot of dumb threads on this board, but this one ranks right at the top.

I don't think there is any comparison with how bad Blake's team were as compared to the basketball team.

This is Capel's 5th season. I thought he did an OK job his first season when we lost all our recruits after Sampson left. To have a break even season that first year with really only Nate Carter inside was a huge accomplishment. Then we had the 2 seasons with Blake. You can't knock getting to a final 4..... We were pretty happy after Capel's first 3 years as compared to Blake.

Move on to year 4. It seemed we would be young last season, but had 3 Mickey D's on the floor. I saw it as a potentially fun year with some young guns. I have to admit I was excited to to see TMG in C&C. The guy was POY in Houston as a HS junior and was good. I refereed the Houston area and TMG and Tiny (AAU) were studs.

Things went south in a hurry last season. They had attitude problems, then had the cloud of the recruiting scandal hit and I'm not sure Capel (Joe C) had any choice but cut Taliaferro loose. Cline then jumped from a sinking ship.

At that point it was like sharks (opposing schools) smelling blood in open water. We have the ongoing NCAA investigation. The MCD triplets all left. The negative recruiting was rampant. Top recruits were scared to consider OU (we were close to getting Terrence Jones early). We couldn't even snare Carter's brother with a glaring need at PG. Top assistants and recruits weren't going to OU with all the uncertainty. School still use the rumors against the Sooners. It's had a snowball effect.

We signed a bunch of plan B players to even field a team this year. Did any on us think this was going to be a good season? Really? The turnaround will take 2-3 seasons.

Joe C is a patient AD. He doesn't make snap judgments. He couldn't care less what a bunch of us message board posters think. He let Jack Spates have several mediocre years with the wrestling team. I think he gives Capel at least one more year. As long as Jeff is the coach, I'll support him because my Sooner loyalty goes a lot deeper than 1 or 2 seasons.

I don't have to like it or agree with it. I just have to support it.

I agree with much of your post, but...

We didn't lose our entire recruiting class (Hi Klegg!) -- Keith Clark, Bobby Maze and Tony Crocker were freshmen that year.

We also didn't only have Nate Carter inside. We also had Taylor Griffin and Longar Longar.

That team also had Austin Johnson, David Goldbold, and Michael Neal.

The repeated claims, as if it's a written-in-stone fact, that the cupboard was bare that season are nothing but revisionist history.

In fact, even with the departure of those three incoming recruits, Sampson left Capel more to work with that season than Capel left himself to work with this season.

Precisely.

This comparison gets so old that its not even funny anymore. I like how the OP is implying that he's frustrated at other people for being confused about OU's program, when he is the one making confusing and irrational comparisons.

Sure Capel is struggling, and its frustrating to watch... But there is no comparison to him and John Blake. Period.
