In a rough loss to West Virginia, Jordan Shepherd stands out | OU Daily

won't play the next game...bet:facepalm

I honestly thought the team looked the best last night with him at the 1 and Woodard/McGusty at the 2/3. It seems like it would benefit the team this year and possibly next if that were the main lineup the rest of this year and let Shep get comfortable running the team in the off chance that that "other" guy doesn't end up at OU ;) and even if he does it would allow him to play off the ball some and not take the beating against some of these teams in the conference all the time.

He played well. So did Lattin. That should be recognized also amidst the barrage of whining.

I see I'm not the only one with a good memory. :)

In truth, my memory is not too good anymore. But if Shepherd appears to be glued to the bench following a game where he played well, it wouldn't be the first time.

Not that Lon owes me an explanation about anything he does, but I'm still trying to understand his substitution pattern. Case in point, Freeman entered last night's game and contributed immediately. He fought for and got a rebound, stole the ball on one possession and sent a WV layup attempt into the cheap seats, all in less than three minutes.

That was his first, last and only opportunity to play in last night's game. One of many head scratchers I have witnessed this season! :facepalm

We all (well most of us ;) ) know that one of the toughest jobs a coach has is figuring out which lineup gives you the best chance to win based on match-ups/how guys practice/etc....Kruger didn't have to worry about that much over the past 3 years.

At this point, that seems to be the #1 question each game is who is going to play?!? Doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it this year. I won't lie, I was trying to figure out why Freeman was even coming in last night given his biggest issue this season seems to be that he isn't very physical yet. So why throw him in against one of if not the most physical/aggressive teams on your schedule?!? Yet, as you pointed out, he did well for the 3 minutes he played and then didn't see the court again. Only to see a few other guys seem to struggle MIGHTILY with the intense pressure they faced. At the end of the game MULTIPLE guys looked like they wanted NOTHING to do with the aggressiveness that WVU throws at you for 40 minutes. At that point, make a point to bench some of these guys given you basically were out of the game any way based on the way those guys were playing.

This season it has been hard to figure out why guys are and aren't playing. There was a stretch that Shep played well one game then we didn't see him much if at all the next game. And others that seem to get minutes no matter what. If you look at the box score from last night, it'll leave you wondering why some guys still get to play if it's based on stats/productivity. I'm not saying it should only be based on one game as all players go through rough patches, I'm saying be consistent in that approach if that's the case.

I'm guessing we're all in agreement that at this point, this season is all but lost. Why not play the guys that you feel can/need make an impact (even if that means coming off the bench) next year and moving forward on a regular basis and make sure they get the "conference" experience they need to help next year and beyond.

I'm not second guessing what Kruger is doing believe me, I would just like a better understanding of it. Playing guys 5-10 mins one game and then not playing them at all the next, doesn't seem like it helps their development. All this is just my opinion based off what I see which is only during games given I live too far away to attend practices which could be a whole different story.

I think Freeman had a T/O or two..looks stuck in mud right now to me..Needs to work on his quickness..if he can

He didn't have a turnover in last night's game. That's essentially my point. Everything Matt did was positive except miss the only shot he took. Yet he was pulled after three minutes and never sniffed the floor again. That's one of the numerous examples I could have used that has left me totally confused about OU's substitution pattern this year.

It occurred to me last night that Lon may be preparing the team for next year by playing ten players or more in every game. That's something you expect to see in the early part of the season, not as we move ever closer to the end. If so, I get that. What do we have to play for at this point? Our only chance at a post season birth is to win the conference tournament.

lol, I'm old too but yeah, Shepard played well 1 game then sat the next 2 or 3..

Yeah, K's subbing has me baffled. I'm "assuming" he's written this season off now and is getting guys playing time.
