Is UT a contender or a pretender this year?

It's one thing to lose to Chaminade, it's another thing to get drilled. Texas gave up 55 points to them in the 2nd half. And it's not like Chaminade was hitting everything they threw up. They only shot 38% from the field and 35% from three. They did shoot 87% from the line and that was a huge difference in the game. Texas shot 57%. Chaminade ended up out-rebounding them 41-33.

True that. I feel a lot better about our chances to beat the whorns in Norman this year, and we might be able to steal one in Austin. Kabongo will help. But this is not a very good UT team right now. Barnes has his work cut out for him if he wants to finish in the top half of the conference.

Chaminade is a trap game. They're always up for every big name school they play. OU two years ago and UT this year will not be last to lose to them. That kid Haskins could play for anybody. He had 32 points, 9 rebs and 2 steals. He was the best player on the floor tonight. Period.

Pretty sure I saw that Chaminade is 7-76 in thus tournament. Not what I'd call a trap game. They're always up, but they're always bad, too. Really no excuse for a team like UT to ever lose to them.

Barns is a good coach and a very good recruiter. He has put a lot of kids in the NBA early. I personally think it is unfair to compare him to Mack Brown.

He is a lot like Mack, actually. Very good recruiter, very ordinary coach. You have to think UT basketball has underachieved some with all that NBA talent that has passed through Austin.

I doubt that Texas worried about the effect on the conference when we had a losing record the last few years. As someone else said, Barnes philosophy that his job was to put players into the NCAA instead of build a team to win the conference has caught up with him this year. They may improve, but they are in for a struggle this year.

From a perception standpoint, it definitely hurts the conference. But from an RPI or SOS standpoint, it won't hurt their standing (or the conference's standing). Division II teams on your schedule are NOT figured into the RPI statistical analysis....at least the last time that I checked.

But that is a horrible loss.

I don't agree with that. UT does not have the history in basketball that it does in football. UT basketball does not get teh fan support that football gets. Most importantly Barnes doesn't say the stupid things Mack Brown says and is not a fanny rubber. He coaches his guys and puts a pretty good product on the floor.

Mack Brown is a joke. IMO Barnes is a pretty solid coach.

If name recognition counts for something, guess this was better than last night's loss. Then again, USC is not even ranked in the top 50 anywhere that I could find. Maybe I missed it. Anybody know how good USC is supposed to be this season?

What kind of play did Barnes draw up in regulation when UT had the ball with 25 to 30 seconds left in the game? Talk about poor execution. Man, the Whorns better hope they get Kabongo back soon!

Barnes is awful. Texas is easily in the top 5, maybe the top 3, of putting players in the NBA over the past decade, yet their on court production doesn't even come close to matching that.
