Jarion Henry is in Norman

Classes start Tuesday, so it would make sense. Though if he was going to be here, wouldn't he have been practicing already?

It would be great if Henery got himself enrolled and was able to practice with the team right away. Becoming familiar with his teamates, learning schemes and assignments, and going thru offseason conditioning will help him and the team.

But, the possibility of him playing and contibuting this season is probably remote.

He would redshirt this season.

Henry playing is the different between an NIT bid and an NCAA bid.
What do you do redshirt him or play him.

We're really close. One more scorer, athletic long player could be it.
It's hard to calculate the positive impact of a return to the NCAAs for the overall health and morale of the program.

I think you are over valuing a freshman coming into the program halfway through the season. While I think Henry will develop into a solid player, I do not see him being the difference in a W or L for any game in this current season. Certainly not enough to garnish an NCAA bid over an NIT bid.

OU's bench is that thin in terms of a scorer.
Henry is a very athletic scorer who can take the ball to the hoop.

I'm not talking a starter or 25 minutes a game.
But 10 minutes of quality depth could be significant.

Henry is not a scorer. Why do people do this? He is an athletic kid, with a limited offensive game right now. Not a great shooter. Not great handles. Excels at defense and offensive rebounding. He will not come in and be a scorer right away. He has the potential, but I'm always skeptical of kids like him developing an offensive game. He has been groomed since he was old enough to dribble a ball to be a basketball player. If he doesn't shoot it well now, chances are it's not something he'll excel at in college either. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but go read some scouting reports on him if you haven't seen him play.

I haven't seen him play. So I did go back and read the scouting reports. It seems that he averaged 15pts., 13 rebounds, and 8 asst. on a very good 38-3 team before signing with New Mexico. Those look like the solid numbers of an all around contributer.

The only knock that I could find on his shooting was concerning his ability from the 3 pt line. Isn't it usually the guards with the glossy scoring averages and the bigs as the slower developers? Grooms and Calvin were 30 pt. scores in high school. Ample evidence that those numbers don't always transfer to college. Aren't college coaches trying to estimate and sign potential just as much as accomplishments.

There is no evidence that Henry is some one deminsional no scoring stiff. And that he couldn't help out alittle right away. Afterall, CJ is Osby's backup now. But, I do think that both the team and Henry would be much better served in the long run if he wasn't put on the court till next season.

I saw him and his dad Skeeter at the game. If Skeeter is still 6'7ish, Jarion was a good 2-3" taller than him.

Skeeter still has that glowing smile!!!!

I see him as a point forward with his length being an advantage. I agree he should sit, learn, get settled academically and eat! Redshirt imo!

Guys, this is one decision I may have to trust our coaches to make. There are just too many unknowns for me to even offer a semi-intelligent opinion.

First and foremost, is Henry capable of contributing right away? If he isn't, why not let him sit the rest of this dance out, get acquainted with his teammates and learn the offensive and defensive sets, so he'll be ready to go next fall?

Unless he's an unusual physical speciman and talent, I find it hard to believe that he would be in game shape from the moment he stepped on the floor. He'd also have to be a quick study to know what Kruger expects on offense and defense. That just seems like too much to ask of a kid fresh out of high school.

If the answer to my first question about contributing right away is, yes. I can see bringing him in for the remainder of the season. Once you get past Osby and Fitz, none of our post players has demonstrated a propensity to put the ball in the hole on a consistent basis. If Henry is that kind of player and he can play defense and rebound, too. I'm all for it!

I think it would be crazy to play him this year unless he is super talented. The season is half over. Conference play is 25% over. If it just takes two weeks to really figure things out to the point that he is not a liability on the floor, conference play will be about 50% over.

I doubt he plays this year but I am really excited he is on the team. His dad played when I was in school and I really hope he has a great career at OU.

Denver, good point on the fact that we are 4 games into big 12.
If he could have joined the team 1/1 maybe it's more of a debate but at this point the redshirt is probably the right idea.

Practicing all semester will allow him to step on the court next year and be ahead of any other first year players.

That's what I think, too. I wouldn't have felt that way before the season started. But at this late date, playing him now makes no sense to me.

He had trouble qualifying originally so getting used to the college life and expectations of the course work without having to play might make the transition to being a college athlete easier for him. I think he gets red shirted unless there is a really good reason to put him on the court.

I don't think people should expect Henry to be here this semester

Interesting. Are you saying that they shouldn't plan on seeing him in Norman until next year or shouldn't plan on seeing him in Norman at all?

The spring semester starts on Tuesday, don't expect him here for that. Should still be in Norman as a 2012 recruit coming this summer/fall.
