March Madness and Covid-19

I should've put a ;) on that because I was actually taking a jab at myself (idiot). That's what happens when you type and aren't talking face to face. And I wasn't insinuating that you were a drama queen....sorry if it came off that way. But I do see plenty of gnashing of teeth when I turn on the tube....I'm just not going to participate in it.

No worries my friend

Tying all this back into March Madness, looks like the NCAA might be changing their mind. Maybe they are getting caught up in the hysteria according to some people or maybe they are paying attention to the statistics and doctors, but this is a statement released tonight after one earlier today where they sounded like everything was on as normal.

This second statement doesn’t sound as optimistic to the “as normal”. We’ll see what they do.

I don’t believe “speculation” plays a big factor in the market.

Investing in the market is based on educated fact based assumptions. If you’re a fundamental investor it’s based on data such as earnings or economic reports. If you’re a technical investor it’s based on historical trends. The reality is the majority of investors that move the market up or down is a combination of the two. Most investors, especially those that can drive stock movements, will not risk capital just based on speculation.

Of course there are those that speculate, day trade, or buy and sell on hunches, rumors, or total guesses. Certain sectors, such as commodities, might have more than others. But regulators have made that difficult and it is a small portion of the investment community and price movements.

This is great information....I appreciate you educating me on this. I had one other question. I've heard the expression "stock prices have no memory". I don't know if it's true or not, but wanted to see if you could clarify and falsify that.

Come on. You’re just making excuses for him now. He stood there and said it would be over in a couple of days. It was a completely irresponsible statement while so many are dying or in danger of contracting this.

From your previous statements I get the impression you want the tourney to be spectator free. The current position of the NCAA is that there will be spectators. Do you believe the NCAA does not believe that if the arenas were to be filled with fans (mostly ours) that it would not lead to more people infected? Yet they have not made the decision at this point to ban spectators. Do you believe they are being disingenuous and uncaring? Politicians are in the same boat for they certainly care, but there is a fine line between caring and causing people to act as if they were attending a Black Monday event and there are only 10 big screens to be had amongst hundreds of shoppers, for we know what the end result would be.

Yeah it’s just a way to say past performance doesn’t guarantee future results. Think about it, stock prices are based on what investors faith is in the company going forward. It’s why you’ll see an earnings report for a company that beats estimates and sales were awesome, yet the stock tanks because their future guidance wasn’t as good. What the company has done isn’t as important as what it will do.

That is what that statement is based upon.

It's more like "what have you yet to do for me lately."

Address the issue and stop deflecting. The POTUS made an irresponsible statement that has zero to do with whether or not the NCAA decides to accommodate fans or not. Also your point about Black Friday makes no sense. The president’s dismissal of this as no big deal can get people killed because they won’t take active measures to avoid infection.

They are discussing this very thing, as well as NBA. The Ivy League cancelled their tournament.

I'm not deflecting for politicians are in a precarious situation. Panic leads to individuals hording certain items which precludes others from having at all (BF reference). This is not good and it is a reality. I feel your dislike for "you know who" is clouding your judgement. People can formulate their own response to the situation for we live in a media driven society. I know many who hate the president yet they are living their lives much the same, outside of washing their hands more, and it has nothing to do with what a politician said or didn't say. I mean where is cvanglid when you need him. My sister-in-law, who refuses to say his name, yet she is not changing her business schedule to travel abroad one iota(she's a prof at Harvard Med and is the supposed leader in her field).

My judgment isn’t clouded in the least. This situation calls for MORE awareness, not dismissal and denial. There’s a lot of space between panic and vigilance.

Using your phraseology, it would be “what are you going to do for me tomorrow”

Btw, just fit a breaking news alert, covid-19 cases just topped 1,000 in America. 13 days ago they were at 15.

We can be more aware and that's certainly the best response, but people will be people. Remember Y2K? It's rather hard to predict the response to certain stimuli. Have you visited your local supermarket as of late? I have a few times over the past week and there are no more people in the store, as the parking lot is no more full. Am I supposed to believe this all falls on the shoulders of a single person? Of course not for we know better.

Did I say it fell on a single person? I did not.
