March Madness and Covid-19

Just scrolled through his Twitter and didn't see that. I think the over hype is very political and what the level heads are saying from the right and left is not near as many people will die from this compared to seasonal flu.

I do agree that the answer is probably somewhere in the middle.

Folks shouldn't be ignoring it, or taking it for granted, but they shouldn't be over-reacting either. I live in OK. There are TWO confirmed cases. I don't expect the company I work for or the companies we do work for, to be going crazy and bringing in special cleaning crews and stuff like that. At this point, educate your employees and keep an eye on the news. I do think people should be limiting some travel. Beyond that, I'm not ready to start doing anything crazy in this part of the country.

if you are healthy and under 60 it is not something you should fear any more than the flu

But you can spread it to those other people. I fear for my family, I will probably be ok. However, if I contact it then I could be spreading it to others especially if I’m not taking precautions.

From a video on the CDC website it states 82% of the illnesses will be moderate in nature. Also, those who are obese or smokers, for example, are in the higher risk group (many of our countrymen qualify as obese).

The fellow named "Osterholm (sp), who many are listening to, contends most transmissions are from the air,so cleaning this and cleaning that will be of little value. He even scoffs at hand washing as a viable way of warding off the virus.

@realDonaldTrump
So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!

I don't agree with this at all.

Even if it is not as serious as the fear and media reports, even on most conservative estimates, it is still 10x plus more deadly than the flu for those under 60, easier to spread with a longer incubation period, and spreads to 3 x as more many people than the flu. And if you are under 60 and get the flu, you can go to the doctor and get Tamiflu for treatment. There is no vaccine or treatment for Covid-19. So saying it isn't any worse than the flu if you are younger isn't based on statistics or facts.

The market has never gone down 20% because of the flu, even the 1918-19 flu. Major events have never been canceled because of the flu. US cities have never implemented elements of martial law (New Rochelle) because of the flu. We've never had CDC and the director of infectious disease testify before congress about the flu that the spread and numbers will get much worse.

This isn't just a virus that is killing old people that smoke. It is a serious threat to infect and impact a great portion of our population. How serious remains to be seen.

And it will be true, not that many will die from this and how many football games were cancelled last year because of the seasonal flu?

Except people under 60 regularly come into contact with people over 60. I personally work with several people over 60. My parents are over 60. My neighbors are over 60. The Walgreens cashier this morning looked over 60.

That's like saying.... "yea, there is a deadly virus out there, but it can only kill infants".... Well, adults come into contact with infants, just like people come into contact with older people.

We are about 45-60 days behind China on the curve and they began trending down last week. Just over 3100 died in China from this. Stick with facts not political agendas from both sides. It's serious but not end of World serious.

You are proving my original post... you and BoulderSooner so far.

  • There is no consensus.
  • Some don't think its dangerous to themselves, only to old people, so they care less
  • Some are buying into the Trump logic that the flu is worse.
  • Body bags will likely have to start piling up to change your mind
  • Etc

Tamiflu doesn't cure or treat the flu. It treats the symptoms. There is no "cure" for the flu.

Yet you said this in your earlier post:
"I think the over hype is very political..."

And you cannot compare China to what may happen here. They basically shut down cities through martial law and have put tracking devices on all their citizens in the impacted area. If they leave their home, the government is immediately notified and knows where they are going. Do you want that here to prevent the spread?

Lets hope you are right, but comparing us to China might not be an apples to apples comparison. Many of those who died in China were smokers so those in high risk groups should be alarmed. We as a country tend to be an obese one at that (close to 40% of the adult population) and this is a separating factor which distinguishes us from the Chinese population.

If you read my post, I said "And if you are under 60 and get the flu, you can go to the doctor and get Tamiflu for treatment." No where did I say it was a cure.

And you are not correct on your description of Tamiflu. It is a treatment specifically for the virus, not just the symptoms, as it blocks actions by the virus.

What is Tamiflu?
Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is an antiviral medication that blocks the actions of influenza virus types A and B in your body.

Tamiflu is used to treat flu symptoms caused by influenza virus in people have had symptoms for less than 2 days. This medicine may also be given to prevent influenza in people who may be exposed but do not yet have symptoms.

I think one important thing to consider is how the death rate increases with age. Overall, it's only ~3 percent. But it goes up pretty steep with age. We are talking about a death rate up 15% in the older age groups. That's crazy high and may be little inflated as there are likely many more mild cases going undiagnosed. But those are the numbers we have to work with right now. However, compare that to he death rate in the > 65 population for the regular flu: 0.8%. That is only slightly higher than the general population death rate for the flu which is around 0.1%.

This means that Covid-19 is extraordinarily more deadly in the older age groups.

We also need to consider the fact that while people may not die, the number of "critical" cases is still around 15%. If there is widespread pandemic, this is going to put a significant strain on the healthcare system.

I think things could go either way right now. But it sure seems like its going to get worse before it gets better.

China took serious action to get to that result that you are opposing.

  • China implemented city-wide lockdowns
  • Implemented mandatory social distancing
  • Built dozens of brand new hospitals to treat patients
  • Converted stadiums into mass quarantine zones
  • Cleaned public areas like nobodies business

The WHO (World Health Organization) said that "China has rolled out perhaps the most ambitious, agile, and aggressive disease containment effort in history.”

Your post implies that China just waited it out and only had 3,000 deaths and that the US is just a little behind the curve on that. China took EXTRAORDINARY measures to get that result. They didn't do nothing and just wait it out.

Also, Tamiflu is practically useless and pretty much a giant scam so Roche can make metric tons of cash.

Correct, they literally locked down a population half the size of the United States. We aren't doing any of that.
