March Madness and Covid-19

Do you think we should?

We should be locking down the areas that are seeing the biggest spikes in Covid-19 infections but I fear at this point that it's locking the barn door after the cows are out.

China took serious action to get to that result that you are opposing.

  • China implemented city-wide lockdowns
  • Implemented mandatory social distancing
  • Built dozens of brand new hospitals to treat patients
  • Converted stadiums into mass quarantine zones
  • Cleaned public areas like nobodies business

The WHO (World Health Organization) said that "China has rolled out perhaps the most ambitious, agile, and aggressive disease containment effort in history.”

Your post implies that China just waited it out and only had 3,000 deaths and that the US is just a little behind the curve on that. China took EXTRAORDINARY measures to get that result. They didn't do nothing and just wait it out.

And to yours and steve's point, they also implemented personalized tracking codes and facial recognition on their citizens to slow it down and track people. The ACLU and Sean Hannity would have a field day if they tried that here.

Okay you got me, we are doing that in one suburb in the United States.

We are doing it because it is the 1st highly concentrated area of its type. If it was the 2nd area it would then qualify as the 2nd area to be locked down. Agree? Only time will tell.

Right, add that to the list.

What China did not do is say, "well, the common cold is pretty bad too, so we shouldn't do anything for this that we wouldn't do for the cold".

It is not the 1st concentrated area.. that would be in Washington state. There are also hotspots in California, Florida, and other places.

New Rochelle is a much smaller area (approx. 13 square miles). If you look at the amount of people singled out relative to the square mileage involved it doesn't match up yet to other areas previously noted (Seattle proper has 182 square miles and the metro are has more than 8k)

Italy is taking extreme action. China took extreme action.

So many things are getting cancelled in the US, but those are private decisions... not federal requirements. I am guessing the US will be the country that "waits it out" and we will see what happens without extreme action.

What's your point? China locked down 150 million people, Italy locked down THEIR ENTIRE COUNTRY. Are you arguing that we should only lock down small towns? Are you putting your own arbitrary limits on containment zones for argument's sake? I don't get it.

I don't agree with this at all.

Even if it is not as serious as the fear and media reports, even on most conservative estimates, it is still 10x plus more deadly than the flu for those under 60, .

actually the most conservative estimates put this at around double the flu for those under 60 and 6 times the flu for the entire population

look at the numbers coming out of south korea for instance

we also have this thing called freedom the china doesn't

and italy has less of

We are about 45-60 days behind China on the curve and they began trending down last week. Just over 3100 died in China from this. Stick with facts not political agendas from both sides. It's serious but not end of World serious.

the US is less than 45 days behind china from case 1

Make no mistake, if the government declares a public health emergency, they can and will put you in quarantine and you won't be allowed to leave. As mentioned above, see New Rochelle.

Just got a breaking news alert: The World Health Organization has now officially declared Covid-19 a pandemic event.

The point is you are using the places you listed as being of high concentration areas and they do not pass the litmus test. The link you provided, as it relates to Seattle, refers to 500-600 cases in the greater Seattle area, which I perceive as being the "metro area," thus 500-600 contained within 8k sq. miles is not on the same page as 120 or so in a 13 square mile area (8k/13=616, 600/120=5 thus Seattle's concentration/virus case is over 120 times the area). Do we agree? All I am doing is pointing out what has happened as opposed to expressing what should be done as they are two completely different precepts for one involves facts while the other one involves opinions and I have not expressed such ideas. Lastly, I am not trying to argue with you because we butted heads previously (I do not engage in that).
