March Madness and Covid-19

should be some great deals on cruises later on this year

My sister and I had scheduled a cruise along the west coast for the first week of April. We are going to reschedule and switch to an Alaskan cruise in 2021.

Unbelievable, Italy has now locked down the entire country. People are only allowed to leave their homes to work, acquire healthcare, or for emergencies. ALL sporting events are cancelled indefinitely. I can't even imagine what that's like.

Crazy response, almost panic by the Italian government.

I was discussing this with a friend yesterday. In the US, if the state or local authority implemented a quarantine, how would this be enforceable? As a republic based on our freedoms, how can the government stop you from going to the grocery store, QT, Starbucks, or McDonald's? That is why I think all this nonsense about hoarding supplies is so ridiculous. If you were quarantined, but not sick, for two weeks because you had been "exposed", would you go out if you need TP or food? I would.

Outside of implementing martial law, I don't think demanding a quarantine in the US would work.

Not to mention.....you can get a pretty good bargain on some stocks right now as well....."buy low, sell high".

True, but would you rather buy something at a 15% discount or a 25-30% discount??

If you are quarantined, it's for a good reason, so please have friends and loved ones do your shopping and leave those purchases outside your front door. You'd be doing the rest of us no favors (to say the least) by continuing to have contact with other people.

I agree with you sky, just saying hypothetically. If I didn't have someone to run errands for me and ran out of supplies, I don't see if how the government can keep people isolated in this country, especially those that are not showing any signs they are sick.

The only problem with that is you have to rely on people being free of selfishness and thinking of others besides themselves, themselves, themselves and so on. And I agree 100% with you because if people were more selfless then the problem would be a lot less challenging, but because we can chalk it up to people being people it is not.

If they weren't so far behind in test kit manufacturing, it would help. But there are many carriers of the disease who are asymptomatic, so until we those tests are readily available to confirm who has the disease and who isn't, cautionary quarantines will sometimes be called for.

South Korea is testing 10,000 people per day. The only reason we are behind is because of the inexplicable restrictions placed on testing by the administration.

It is a simple RT-PCR,

Yep, I've got an instrument right here in the lab where I'm a supervisor that could run them if we got the test kits. But we don't and we probably won't. Right now the State Department of Health either runs them or ships them to CDC.

I just did a quick count in my head....my department alone has 9 PCR machines (2 in my lab) and a qPCR machine, and this isn't a big department on our campus.

My lab is at a medium-sized facility, we have 4 PCR instruments from one manufacturer and 3 from another. Plus plenty of instruments that run immunoassays if they ever come up with that kind of test for it.

The number of my campus would be in the 1000s if I had to guess (or at least high 100s at the minimum). Granted, this is a huge biomedical institute.

It would be nice if there was an ELISA for this, but I doubt that happens since they don't do that for the flu.

Another Cryo-EM structure of COVID-19 came out this morning.

Wow! That's cool. I'm just at a medium-sized VA hospital.

Just clicked the link, perusing it in my office as I procrastinate today lol.
