March Madness and Covid-19

My vote would be no fans, no tourney, period. This isn’t something we HAVE to do. It’s supposed to be a fun and memorable experience for all. It will be none of that especially with the cloud of fear panic hanging over the country. If they think it’s bad enough to keep fans away, then just cancel the tourney. Would absolutely suck for all involved, but that would be my vote— even as someone who LOVES the Tournament.

This is so over hyped it's silly. Less than 1k cases in the US as I type and over half the deaths occurred in a nursing home.

What's silly is to look at the progression of this and think it's over-hyped. Italy has closed down the ENTIRE country. New York has already taken the measure of putting an entire town in isolation. The only way to prevent a 1918-like disaster is to take drastic measures now.

sounds like a way to ruin the economy which would do more long term damage then this could

Not true, 3k in China. Lay off CNN steve

Where are you getting your information? People that don't take this seriously are the ones that are going to make it much worse. And for the record, I don't get my information from CNN. I'm a scientist.

20 people on one cruise ship died from this. TWENTY! That's an incredibly virulent strain, and what worries me is the transmission rate. We talked about this upthread. Even science skeptical members of congress are quarantining themselves now. The disinformation is going to get people killed.

I’ve decided I know nothing about this so I’ll stick to things it’s reasonable for me to have an opinion on. Even “experts” seem to disagree on this... docs and scientists are NOT aligned and you can get wildly different takes depending on the source. So, who knows really. But I do know this... I don’t like half-measures or decisions based on simply CYA. So I think you either hold the tourney as planned or if that is deemed too dangerous, then cancel it. It’s the pinnacle event for the entire NCAA calendar; I think you either do it or don’t. If they choose to cancel, I’ll be disappointed, but I’ll assume they know more than I do. I do not want fan-less games.

In the NBA, it MIGHT be a little easier to kick can down the road. These games aren’t THAT important right now so going no-fans for awhile to simply keep things chugging along might work for a short period of time. That said, if you believe Osterholm (on CNN today) it could very well be a 7-8 month timeline of shutdown. And how can we afford that? I don’t know.

Just over 4k deaths worldwide and a little over 3100 of those were in China, slow down steve.

Let me break this down so It's a little more clear. If you are completely healthy and under 60 and you catch the Novel Coronavirus Covid-19 you have about double the death rate as ALL people who catch seasonal flu. And people who get Covid-19 and are over 60 and have immune system problems die at orders of magnitude higher rates.

so 2 out of 1000 chance for the under 60 person ...

We are the infant stages of this... have you ever stopped and wondered why entire countries are shutting down? Two weeks ago we had 15 cases, right now we are at about 1,000. And that's with a pathetic testing regimen. I'm not saying that we should panic. I AM saying that we will probably be playing basketball in empty arenas, if at all. Italy has cancelled ALL sporting events.

So you slow down.

That's for an entirely healthy person under 60, that doesn't include all the other subsets of people. You aren't getting what I'm saying, that's an incredibly high death rate from a disease that millions of people are probably going to catch

which part ..

if you are young and healthy should you be worring about this virus??

Yes you should, because if you are young and healthy, and you catch this, the transmission rates are so high that you are probably going to give it to a loved one that is over 60 and/or immuno-suppressed, if you don't die yourself.
