Optimism and faith can get people killed in a situation like this. I have zero faith that my neighbors are taking this seriously enough, and neither should you.
BTW, the country of Inida, with its population of over 1 billion people is now trying to contain this. That's terrifying.
Scared and hiding?....really? This is why I always run "words" through my filter and then look at the spectrum from where they came. I think a better choice of words would be self-contained and aware for the time being. I'm not going to spread fear because it doesn't do anyone any good. If you want to project your fear into the conversation....fine, it's a free country. But some of us choose a more optimistic outlook in times like these because comfort calms and we have faith in our neighbors and this country.

well I am glad you live in an area where you can have faith in your neighbors. MY neighbor Okies, otoh, watch fox news and still swear this is all a big political hoax. Right now I just want them to stop potentially spreading this cr@p. you try explaining to general Okies about asymptomatic positives spreading this and the only thing you hear is "the president (or governor) says it is safe". I have considered telling them it's an alien invasion to see if that would change their behavior. no avail. they'll just bring popcorn.
Oxygen is your friend.
Terrifying? And that is the difference between you and I Steve. I'm not going to get hysterical over things that I can't control. In my bubble (family, work, congregation), people are taking this very seriously and complying with standards and behavior set forth by the "experts". Is everyone doing this everywhere?.....of course not. But all I can do is my part.
I don't watch much of the news anymore because those outlets are there for viewers and clicks. Sure, they report some accurate information, but that information always seems to be through some type of lens unfortunately. If it bleeds, it leads. I'm almost 50 and the hysterics of social media have made it worse. I think everyone needs to take a breath.

and what does that even mean? is that some wise-crack about being worried?
in an effort to try to comprehend the surface contamination issue ...

Am I hysterical? No, I'm calm, but this is terrifying in that the death toll is going to be incredible. If you are taking all the precautions, then you too have a level of fear. Fear is a good thing in this situation.
Assume everyone you see has the virus, most of them will before this is over.
So the only effective thing we could do is to not overburden the healthcare system?

Correct, spread the cases out over a longer period of time so that they don't exceed the capacity of the system. That means that people that don't have Covid-19 but have other problems can get treated as well. If we overwhelm the system then your grandma has a stroke and needs to be on a vent, nope, out of luck. Grandma dies.
i understand this ... what some don't seem to understand is that we as a country can't do what we are doing now (or a more restrictive lock down ) for 3 more months .
Yes we can, we are the richest country in the world.
1 more month makes this the great depression best case
3 months ...........................not something anyone really wants to even ponder
Yes we can, we are the richest country in the world.
Again, we are the richest country in the world. We pay for many wars like it's nothing, we can pay for this, if we have the will and the leadership. We will see about that last part.

We have never paid for a war like this could be. And to the point how much of your wealth are you willing to give up for the cause? If you want others to do as such then it is fitting that you do as well.
