Matt Korcheck

He is averaging 16-7 this season. Originally signed with UTEP in 09 as the 29 ranked big man per rivals. Offers from New Mexico,Baylor, Auburn, and Oklahoma. 6'9" 220 lbs. Said recently that he wanted to redshirt and develope more. The school willing to do that would lead in his recruitment. Will wait to the late signing period to decide. Has taken no official visits.

OU insider quotes his coach as saying he is averaging 15 points and 7 boards a game. He is athletic for a 6'9" guy that scores near the rim and finishes on the break. His weakness if interior post defense but he stronger away from the basket. The kid apparently isn't talking to anyone until the season is over. The coach is also quoted as saying Oklahoma has made the best impression but Auburn is also in the mix because that staff signed him out of high school when they were at UTEP.

My take is I wish he was doing better on the boards. I think OU could use a guy like Jurrick given they will have Osby, Fitzgerald and M'Baye next season. This kid sounds like a reasonable prospect and OU has two scholarships to give for next season so I will have zero problem if OU signs him.

He's tall. If he has any ability at all, he can be a useful player for us (see C.J. Washington). I say sign him up.

Hmmm. I'll reserve judgment until I can see more from him.

His list out of high school certainly wouldn't overwhelm anyone, but from what I've been able to find on the web there is more interest from higher level schools this time around. I'd always prefer a JUCO that feels he is ready to compete or provide some kind of contribution (large or small) early rather than redshirt, but maybe Kruger and Co is OK with next year's post rotation once Mbaye is available.

Who knows. It's at least something to keep an eye on.

Arent part 2

Agree...This kid will contribute nothing next season. It would be one thing if he was around 6'11 b/c we are missing a true center but he's only 6'9 and he's not even getting 7 rebounds a game(6.3rpg). Theres got to be some high school kid out there with 4 years of eligibility instead of 2 that we could take a chance on...maybe even redshirt. Or some other juco big man out there that can contribute right away. Or at the very least, get a transfer.

If a big man can't dominate the boards in the juco leagues...he won't be able to do it in the big leagues.

Good points. Unless the kid's measurables are good/great, I think I would prefer a transfer, especially if the plan is to wait year anyway. The rebounding is low for JC, but the coaching staff obviously see something in him worthwhile.

They also saw something worthwhile in Arent as well.

Any one here know how good the Arizona JUCO league is?

Hit and miss, not one of the best in the nation that's for sure. Kid is averaging unimpressive rebounding #'s in JUCO and wants to redshirt a year...not feeling this one.

vbdad says OU would likely redshirt Korcheck, which makes a lot of sense with the number of bigs on our roster next season. That would give him a year to learn the system and to improve his game. We'll need him a lot more the following season.

In retrospect, Arent should have sat out this season. James Hale said when he was signed that the kid wanted to redshirt his first year at OU. Maybe Coach Kruger should have listened to him.

Or, mayby Kruger got it exactly right. Mayby he knew exactly what he was getting and felt that 3 yrs. to get 2 yrs was too high of a price for Arent.

Kruger got here late and Arent was a late pickup. Kruger didn't have any tall guys and took a shot with an available scholarship. Now, I got too high on him. It doesn't look like Kruger did. I'm pretty sure that Coach can sign a better big for what would have been Arent's 3rd year.

If Coach signs this Juco big from Arizona and redshirts him, I think the fans can rest easy. At least in Kruger's eyes, he will be a much better prospect than Arent. If he wasn't, he wouldn't pay 3 to get 2.

You don't know why they took Arent and neither do I. However, I would suspect they took Arent as the best available player because they were short 6 players when they got hired. So they started the season 3 scholarships short of a 13 man roster with M'Baye using one of the scholarships (meaning they only have 9 eligible players). When Newell left they went to 4.

Don't know if it's an indictment on the rest of the league or not (though I suspect it is) but the Arizona schools that make it up here for nationals are usually eliminated fairly quickly.

I wouldnt count on the Arizona juco league.

The only leagues you can really trust in juco is the Kansas, Texas, and southern (mississippi, florida) juco leagues. But, if you are going to recruit jucos it should be primarily out of Texas and Kansas.

Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Idaho, Missouri = good juco basketball.

You may be right. Quality bigs are hard to find every year. But the options were certainly limited by the time Kruger and his staff arrived.

I was on board with signiing Arent, too. And, he could still turn out to be worthy of a scholarship. JUCO players usually improve appreciably from their junior to their senior seasons.

I don't see why fans are negative about this kid. He is being recruited by several BCS schools. He must have some talent if multiple BCS schools are showing interest.

The article on OUinsider lists interested schools as OU, UTEP, Pitt, N. Mexico, Auburn, Marguette and Arizona. Even if you assume OU is lost and doesn't know what they are doing (which I don't), you still have two Big East schools, an SEC school, and a Pac 12 school recruiting this kid, as well as New Mexico and UTEP.

Given the numbers at OU, I view virtually any kid that is being recruited by schools like Pitt, Marquette and Arizona as a positive. Pitt is having a bad year but Marquette is currently ranked 8th in the country and in second place in the Big East. Arizona is having a down year by recent standards but they are in 3rd place in the Pac 12. Additionally, New Mexico is tied for 1st in the Mountain West. These schools are not recruiting this kid because they have no other choices.
