MBB TPT2 TRANSFER PORTAL THREAD 2

Good post. OU already has state of the art football facilities, and still is putting an additional $390 million. Texas' new basketball arena was around $300-$375 million based on various reports.

I included this bit of info originally but it must have been lost while I was editing the post: That $390 million includes investments in other sports, but of course, football gets the lion's share.

Noone said we didn't raise NIL money. It has been stated over and over that our NIL is more football-centric. Multiple Big 12 schools prioritize basketball more than we do. That is just a fact. There is an article about NIL Collectives also. The top 20 most ambitious. We are in it but we are #17...Texas Tech and West Virginia are ranked above us.

Supposedly we are starting to step up in football to fight with the big boys. We just need to be willing to do it in basketball. I don't know why this is so hard to believe?

OU hasn't really been ahead of the game with NIL but we've started making better moves.

Outside of KU, what school in the Big 12 could you say prioritizes basketball over football? Baylor is the only one I think an argument could be made for. KSU is the reigning conference football champion, TCU played for the national championship, Baylor and OSU have each been very close to making the playoff in the past few seasons. If multiple schools with far smaller budgets have been able to be good in both, while we fumble around in each, then there is a massive problem.

I did not say prioritize over football...I just said prioritize.

Honestly, how much money gave we spent actually on the basketball program? Our basketball facilities are probably lower half in the conference. Basketball just isn't real important here like it is in other places. That's not to say we shouldn't be better, don't get me wrong...my point was just that schools put basketball higher in the pecking order.

No school spends more on basketball than football...even KU. Why do you not believe someone is spending more than we are? It happens. We know where we are investing our money.

Maybe moving to the SEC will change some things. Not sure

I’m referring specifically to NIL. I’m quite confident the average KU basketball player makes more in NIL than their average football player.

As for us, I have no clue. Last year people said our basketball players were all going to make either 25 or 50k, I can’t recall which. And I have no clue if that’s true. No one really does.

Well if 50k is our average number no wonder we aren't getting the portal "big fish"...according to this article, top guys in the portal are getting 500k

We landed McCollum, who by most accounts was a top 10ish Portal kid.

And those are two different things. There is the NIL we are giving pretty much everybody once they get on campus ($50k), and there are other NIL opportunities that kids are getting.

OU football and basketball have been hesitant to hand out big chunks of money up front. We aren't alone. By all accounts, teams like Bama and even UGA aren't playing the game that way either (football). Doesn't mean it isn't happening for a few players, or thru the Portal, or that once on campus the schools aren't putting the kids in a position to get more dollars. I know Dillon Gabriel makes money off his clothing brand that I believe OU helped him establish. Rattler was doing something similar as he was leaving OU.

I just hate all the guessing. The fact is, nobody posting on this board can accurately say what is normal in the NIL world, or what our teams are offering or are not offering. That information is just not public like that.

It mostly isn't public, which is part of my irritation, but if top transfers are getting $500k I hope we start stepping up.

I think everyone knows that, but a GREAT deal of the money the athletic department takes in comes from donors. When you ask those donors to give even more--much more--to cover huge facilities upgrades, it can't help but impact how much money goes to NIL. Even the big money donors have limits on how much they can/will pony up.

So with OU striving to simultaneously fund not one but two very expensive new endeavors--major facilities upgrades and NIL--it's not hard to see how the major demands on donors made by the former could negatively impact the latter.

Yes, this is an issue. NIL is much more important than having best in class facilities. The current facilities are better than most professional franchise facilities. There is no need to keep spending that much money on facilities unless they are completely outdated. That money would be better spent on acquiring talent.
