Not a lot of movement as yet. Perhaps waiting for players from the later stages of the tournament to make decisions as whether they will be moving on and if the higher ranking teams are ready to cherry pick what's out there.
Then OU and others can fight over the scraps.

Because as we all know, basketball is about nothing more than scoring. Nothing else matters.

It’s so funny that Ryan Spangler is loved by so many on this board, but Hill is being trashed by so many as a guy who doesn’t provide much and won’t be badly missed. If we didn’t play at a snail’s pace, and if he had teammates like the 2016 team had, Hill’s numbers would have been better than Spangler’s. Add in the defense, and it’s hard to see how people don’t see this as a loss.

It isn't just about scoring but there is nothing that he does that stands out enough to warrant that kind of money. He is a pretty good defender but he is overmatched against bigger, more athletic guys. He struggles against the bigger posts he sees at this level. He isn't a go-to scorer. He isn't a a great rebounder. He is a GOOD but not GREAT player.
That is my point. Hill is a solid ROLE player.

If THAT is going to cost you 250k but I could get a stud for 500k and he's asking for 500k then I'd be just fine with him walking.

He is more than pretty good defensively. And as far as struggling against bigger posts, that would be like saying Rudy Goebert is only pretty good because he wouldn’t be effective guarding on the perimeter. Hill should never have to guard true post players. He was put in that position occasionally for us because Groves often couldn’t stay out of foul trouble and we didn’t have anyone else who could do it. Given his size, I’d say he more than held his own in those situations. We lost for a lot of reasons this season, and I don’t recall ever thinking that his post defense was anywhere near the top of the list.

He is the same height at Kevin McCullar. His offensive numbers were just about the same, despite playing in an offense that played much slower and lacked shooters. McCullar was widely considered one of the best defenders in the country, and I think Jalen is comparable. McCullar was, at best, KU’s third option offensively. Yet Self specifically targeted him last year in the portal and he was an instant starter and huge part of their team. He wasn’t a star, and wasn’t a real threat from deep. Labels like role player don’t mean much to me. I guess some people feel that if you don’t score 20 a night or grab 10 rebounds a game, you’re a role player. I think Jalen will find himself a “role” similar to McCullar on a good team.

He was our best all around player and won big games for us. At Texas as a sophomore he was clutch down the stretch. It is a loss. The only guy that never looked out of place in the conference.

I agree, took me 15 teaching in the inner city to make 500K..and that's a big IF...

unfortunately it's the times now...

He looked out of place every time against osu this year to the tune of 4-21 from the field in 3 games (1-12 in last 2). He got abused for 40 minutes by their 6-8+ guys. They wouldn’t even guard him on the 3 point line because he was no threat. Then he drives to the lane and gets swatted into the stands. No chance to defend their big guys either as they just ate him up in the paint. Osu big guys couldn’t wait to go up against his tiny ass.

except McCullar was actually a guard and averaged more rebounds, more assists, more points, more blocks playing slightly less minutes per game.

Role player I guess is a relative term if you are a casual fan but every good team needs role players who play defense (like Jalen), do the dirty work (like Jalen) but are not really capable of being "the guy" (like Jalen).

I think you are letting my view of Hill get in your way dude. I think Jalen has value...but he is in no universe more than a role player on a good team.

The whole struggling against bigger posts was a point that he has limitations. He isn't a wing (like McCullars) and he wasn't a true post. He is a little bit of a tweener......he was a good player for us and probably maxed out what he was capable of. To take the next step a guy like Jalen Hill needs to be that third or fourth option, who can defend, who will mix it up but isn't a focal point for you. There is nothing wrong with being a role player and you seem to think they term is a slight...it isn't...it just defines a guy like Hill. You don't have to score 20 ppg to be a good player but you aren't going to be elite relying on the Jalen Hill's of the world to be your best player.

Guess I "glad" we are at least contacting these guys but man....after seeing all the names on those lists I'm not sure we get one of them...ah well.

Oh I agree with you here. But saying he shouldn’t be your best player is a lot different than saying his loss isn’t damaging, which some are arguing. I think a third or fourth best player has a lot of value. Assigning a dollar figure to it is hard to do, but I just hate losing him. With continued development from Los and maybe Oweh, perhaps he would have been our third best player next year. Losing that is a setback.

You cherry picked two games?

As it stands it is a loss....I'm just saying the production won't be hard to replace and we may be able to find a better fit for the position PM had him playing and if the money that is being tossed around is true, I think I'd rather use that money on pooling for a better player. That was my main point.

Hill is a role player on a really good team, but he's more than that on the level of team we've been in recent years. I can only hope we are so improved next year that we don't miss his contributions.

We can probably find portal guys that will score more, but I'll be surprised if we can easily replace his defense and leadership.

I'll agree with this viewpoint

You cherry picked two games?

Those stats were over 3 games. You said he never looked out of place. He absolutely looked out of place against osu. And it is the exact example of why he isn’t irreplaceable. He was regularly dominated by any decent 6-8 forwards.

I fully support the notion that Hill is a poor man's McCullar.
